718 yards with FX Impact M3/Absolute MOA/Coldshot

We decided to bring in the new year with a mountain drive and after a while noticed a beautiful, rocky mountain side with some nice patches of gravel and loose dirt that makes for great ELR shooting conditions. I pulled out the rangefinder and ranged anywhere from about 648 to 750+ yards. Perfect!

After selecting what I figured would be the best spot to see my Impacts, I ranged it at 718 yards. I quickly set up my portable bench, M3, and dialed to the necessary MOA on the Absolute MOA Digital Readout with my Coldshot base. I only had a handful of prototype slugs in a couple variations to try but figured this would be a great spot to test them out.

After getting some good results I saved a few slugs to shoot on video. So I set up my tripod/spotting scope, attached my phone, and started sending. INCOMING!!!!!!!

I believe my first shot on the video was a hit but the area is way too difficult to get to for verification.

That was .25 cal.

On my M24 I have a right handed Cold Shot and Absolute MOA.
I switched from shooting right handed, to left handed and it was easy to switch the Absolute MOA to the right side.
The joy of using the Absolute MOA is that I don't have to read the Cold Shot dial pointer anymore since I made the switch. The dial indicator is all in need.

If you've got a minute would you mind telling me what scope and model you are using? Also what bipod you are using and slugs /gr? I'm using altaros .25 cal in 50 gr atp smooth, just wondering if I would have any luck going out to this distance.... My last group was 2.075-in at 300 yards in the wind, I basically just want to know about your scope because I want to see how far your AO goes out to, I'm using an arken ep 5 it goes out to 500 yards and then it has an Infinity Mark. I appreciate any info thanks

My experience has been that if you're sub MOA at 300, then that MOA should hold out to much farther yardages in good conditions. I think you'll do great!

There is a couple of things, like the slugs, that I can't really speak of right now because they're in the prototype phase.

I'm using a Vector Optics Sentinel X 10-40×50. Most would consider it to be a relatively low end scope. I only use it to show just how effective the Absolute MOA Digital Readout with an adjustable base can be.

By keeping the scope optically centered, I get the clearest sight picture and the best optical performance possible with the given glass. Since the adjustable base is doing all the work, I get that performance through the entire 300 MOA of adjustability and I have no issues focusing to 718 yards and beyond. The Sentinel X side focus only goes to 100 before a gap and then to Infinity. I hope this helps.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the prototype slugs I shot in the video are the new Corbin/Skout slugs.

Not only do these new slugs shoot great at ELR, Bill Gardener took 1st and I got 2nd in the Slug EBR at the Oregon Airgun AOA Extreme Airgun Challenge a couple of weeks ago shooting them.

Just last week I took my first shots EVER at 200y —
with an RTI Prophet II Compact in .25cal.
And the results weren't even bad!

The Altaros Smoth'ies beat the JSB Heavies.

I received some .251 Skout/Corbin’s to test while in Oregon.
I shot them (48.8 grain the same as the .2475” diameter used in the Skout slug barrels) in my .25 Panthera 600mm with 1:18 Superior Heavy liner. Same gun that won the Long Range and was 4th in the 100Y BR slug.
100Y in swirly wind, they were very accurate. In fact, as accurate as the .25 Altaros ATP Smooth 49.5 that I shot that weekend.
However, I was disappointed in the BC of these slugs. I didn’t think they would be quite as good as the Altaros, but I expected close….
Here’s what I got. A G1 BC of 0.133 at 900 fps. Maybe I need to shoot them faster? But judging by the accuracy, they were stable…. The SF is greater than 1.5, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

For comparison, this below is what I get from the Altaros ATP Smooth 49.5 at 890 fps and 100Y. A G1 BC of 0.218.

I’ve sent this result in to Skout, who will pass on to Corbin for analysis.

I suspect it's the somewhat large cross section hollow point diminishing the BC, whereas Altaros is a solid nose design, and Mike N's also with his newest swaged slug design, thus contributing to those higher BC's.

Hollow points are to try to cater to the hunters, which is fine and all, but for comps this has it's downsides.

I'm not sure why your BC is so low with the Corbin/Skout slugs. That seems very odd. I ran a full mag of them over the chrony about a month ago in much colder weather and got a .172.
M3 700mm Superior Heavy

We were shooting some ELR today (650-680 yards) in the mid 70s and I ran a quick handful of shots over the chrony. My speed was about 905 fps and BC was .178 if I remember correctly. I didn't bother taking a pic of that one.
They were still packing a punch at 650+.

Oddly enough, when we shot the Altaros over the same chrony, we only got a .189 average at 883 fps.

You were told......but actual testing differed.

Seems like quite a few slugs have inflated BC's like for one the 25 cal 29gr NSA's I use in my Uragan. Supposed to be .093 but around .075 actual. Isn't it odd slugs are hardly ever BC underestimated?! That's because it's not good for selling bullets with the advertising stating the actual BC's.

The firearms bullet industry used to be notorious at over stating BC's until people learned that the advertised BC's wouldn't allow dope to line up at longer distances. We knew what the station pressure was, what the actual velocity was using Chrono's like the Oehler, at known distances measured with expensive LRF's, and I can't remember a time the BC didn't have to be dropped on a bullet for dope to line up to actual. Back then, like around 2010, I figured it out and was hitting steel enough to start winning long range steel matches.

It is what it is, right?! Once confirmed at distance you know the answer.

Thanks for the info. I’ll shoot a few more next time I’m out shooting I always get 0.215 ish from the Altaros and confirmed by the drop at longer ranges. My liner is the 1:18 twist Superior Heavy 600mm.
