It looks long because the ocular lens is dialed all the way back. My eyes aren't as good as they use to be and that's the only way that I can get the display in focus. There's actually a generous amount of eye relief; up to 100mm.

That's been so long ago that I cannot remember if I installed an o-ring or not. Either way, there is an o-ring there now. I also put vibra-tite on the threads and haven't had a problem since then.
