question for redwolf ft shooters

I shot a Red Wolf (review gun) for a couple field target matches and have shot friends Red Wolf's a fair bit too, in various settings and situations.

I think that for Hunter class field target, there isn't anything better than a Red Wolf.

But for Open or WFTF (where we sit on the goofy bumbag) a USFT or Thomas is probably a better option, heck, both guns were literally created for such shooting. I say "goofy" because there aren't many other applications where shooting from a bumbag with a big knee riser and/or shooting harness and/or butthook and/or shooting glove and/or shooting jacket have much real world value.

In other words, the Red Wolf's design as more of a "sporter" rifle fits best in Hunter class (because of the position from which they shoot), and has much broader applications than the Open/WFTF specific use guns like the USFT and Thomas.

Thanks for your input. Im going to try the redwolf as my maverick just doesn’t seem to cut it can’t get the 177 to shoot as well as my 22. it’s not terrible but not quite as accurate as i need to play this game. not sure if its me with a bull put or i leaning more to just the gun. Shot a redwolf saturday 3 dryfires to test the trigger and 2 shots from styx @36 yds and both in the same hole dead ctr so i think im getting 1

I'm not sure what your goal is taking shots at Open and WFTF shooters when posting in the FT section. The constant poop talking is a bit much.

As for hunting anywere but the desert lugging around a bucket is laughable. Bumbags and pads are the seat of choice when spot and stalking or hunting in the woods. Maybe look a bit further than the end of your nose before making such outrageous claims.

As for the rest of the gear? It's a game. It's fun to have toy's. Please explain the real life application of carrying a bucket or stool, stroller/golf cart, air tank, cooler and umbrella?

You're not winning any fans poopting on the other FT classrs

I shoot Open class and as aware as anybody (and realistic enough to admit it) that shooting from a bumbag with a shooting harness and a giant knee rest doesn't extrapolate as a skill useful in any other situation.

Open and WFTF class field target shoot from a very niche position. Such a niche position that the skill isn't very useful for other shooting.

I have shot at prairie dogs and starlings and euro doves (pesting) from a bucket and sticks. I have not used my field target position for anything but field target, practice and matches.

The original point I was trying to make is that a Red Wolf makes a better Hunter class field target, and therefore general use airgun than does a USFT or a Thomas. But a USFT or a Thomas make better guns for the niche positions of Open and WFTF classes.

As I already stated. I shoot Open class in field target and have for about 3 years. I've got nothing against it, it's just not a useful skill to have for anything but shooting field target.

While not exactly as your asking ( Redwolf / Thomas ) but damn close enough to have an experienced opinion.

Shot Hunter class FT with a Daystate MK3 sporter, as well a bit with a Airwolf sporter and a LOT with a RAW TM / bottle combo that is also very similar.

Then got a Thomas FT that I playing with this year having shot 3 matches with it thus far.

SO ... if a decision was to be made for "Hunter Class" FT work i would go back to my Sporter type guns and call it a day .. A good day.

My crutch in being able to shoot a Thomas, well as a wood stocked sporter is Unless doing offhand or kneeling the rifles never shouldered !! Shot from a sitting deadman position either style rifle can be shot equally as well with practice. Offhand or kneeling i find the Sporter to be more forgiving especially if on uneven ground and off shooting angles.

As stated in a similar type thread, Neither is more accurate than the other ... There tools and if they fit the user well you can do well using them. If fits all wrong you fight it and won't shoot as well IMO.

I have owned a Red Wolf, AirWolf, Styer, a couple TM 1000 and a Thomas. In the Hunter class my Thomas shoots better off the bucket and bipod. Off hand is another story. I use to do fairly well with the Thomas standing. At 12.5 lbs it is now a struggle to hold it steady enough to get off a good shot. Kneeling is out of the question with any gun due to knee Replacements about 11 years ago. This spring I injured my right shoulder and playing with a Huntsmen Revere with a old Simmons 1" tube and front objective. Total package is about 8 1/2 lbs and struggling less offhand... but I get more movement off the sticks with it. The Thomas weight is a benefit from that position for me. I have a GP this weekend down in Mass. and still undecided what I will play with. I would like to see my shoulder get better but only surgery is likely the only remedy, and after a fall in the winter of 2006 resulting in a roto cuff tear of my left shoulder the recovery time was just south of 6 months. Winter isn't the best time to be laid up when the snow starts falling. All the rifles mentioned are good quality air guns its all about what works for you and your budget ... and what all you put into it.

This is my 2nd season using my .177 Red Wolf for HFT off a monopod. I don't regret paying the money for a minute. At full power (18.5 fpe) I was getting over 200 shots out of a fill on the original bottle. I've since replaced it with a 700cc bottle. While the trigger is light I love it. It certainly makes it easier for a drive-by shot in the standing and kneeling positions.

thanks motorhead i get what you’re saying. i guess personally i expected to hear the thomas in a showdown might have an edge in accuracy. if im spending this kind of money on an air gun in 177 (which i can’t even hunt with in pa) i expect to be a laser! lol just hard sometimes saying its the shooter or the gun you know? lol

From a pure mechanical accuracy from a gun with controlled environment and in a vise there are so many guns that is is very difficult to distinguish accuracy apart provided it has the right tune for the right ammo. For accuracy achieved by a given shooter the ergonomics makes more difference than the gun. To Scott’s point for hunter field target matches a descent traditional sportster rifle would do the trick with a bit work on the tune and dope. Thomas is superbly accurate but so is a 177 avenger with the right tune/ammo especially on the topic of field target where the kill zones are relatively large compared to what the bench rest guys are trying to hit which is where Thomas/redwolf’s consistency really shines. FT/HFT/Open class matches IMHO are focused more on shooter’s skills than pure gun accuracy like bench-rest. My 1720T can also drop pellet on pellet at 30 yards, so can my crown, so can my S200, so can my friend’s avenger…….but nicer guns are much easier to shoot accurately due to the much better ergonomics. Amount of adjustments for ergonomics on a Thomas is dizzying. My 1720T is so light it’s just so hard to shoot accurately consistently.

TOOL .... does it fit your technique ?

Weight, length & balance .... Doable or struggle with it ?

Sadly, if your still in the learning or just not well seasoned in required skills, buying into a top shelf rig won't make you a better shooter ... Sorry.

This sum's it up . You already have good tools .
