Wind sock? Wind Flag ? What do you use?

I will start off, My back yard range was three wind flags, One at 25 yards one at 35 yards and at the end at 48 yards, I use two and three foot sticks hammered in the ground , On top I use thin ribbon like you make bows from, Wife has this stuff in her sewing kit,Comes on a spool all different colors ,, I use a thumb tack to attach the ribbon to the stick

I tried streamers on sticks but for downrange I've now gone with a set of Orlando wind flags. Compared to other similar products, these are actually 'reasonably' priced. I bought a 6-pack - 3 for the home range and 3 for the Cowboy range where we can shoot 100 yards. They are really well made, and thought through from a design perspective.

Since we have a canopy over the shooting tables, I tie several pieces of angler glo bug yarn to the top-front support, so shooters can just look up for a quick check of wind direction at the benches.

If you guys want to use flagging tape for wind visualization, Amazon has had some of the fluorescent hot-pink stuff on sale for a while for only $1.49 a roll (150'). Cheaper than I ever see flagging tape sell for! I've stocked up buying the limit of 4 rolls per week for the last 3 weeks. Many uses around the house, around the range, etc.

I use a 18” section of the 4.5mil
Flagging tape as a tail in my wind flags. The purpose for using the heavy 4.5mil vs the standard 2mil is because a 45 degree angle on the 4.5mil tail is a 3mph wind. The standard stuff is too light for me. I get a good read on wind velocity up to about 6mph with the 4.5mil stuff.

I use the inexpensive MTM wind flags as suggested to me by REVOMAN. Although they work well and wind direction(quartering) can be read easily, the one problem is that they are meant to be staked into the ground. If you have soft dirt no problem, but asphalt, gravel, or hard pan you’re SOL with these, unless you figure out a way to tripod them, but that doesn’t guarantee they won’t topple over.

So before RMAC I made these up- 1 gallon buckets filled with play sand, with a rubber electrical firewall grommet installed dead center. The MTM’s wind flag stake can easily puncture the grommet and the seal from weather maintains around the shaft of the wind flag. Easily portable

What if you stand an 12” section of 4x4 on end and drill a hole for the wind flag? Just a thought

That suggestion and ones like it would be great for a more permanent set up if your talking about burying part of that 4 x 4 into the ground. I’m going to use RMAC as an example as to why just a 4 x 4 standing above ground wouldn’t work.

Day 2 of my heat, range master yells out cease fire 8 minutes into our 30 minute shoot. The winds were so strong, approx four or five of the target stands at 100 yards blew over. I see the utah air employee kids gabbing boulders and carrying them over to help hold the stands upright. I believe the winds reached up to 40 mph that day. Someone who was there correct me on day 2’s wind speed if I’m incorrect.

Yeah, I’ve went online and looked at the wind flag set ups that were in the over $100 range and a lot of them are on special tripods, and I’ve seen pics where these tripods have sand bags on them. Midway and amazon at the time I bought four of these mtm flags had them at I believe $15 each, so with a score like that the thought of having to now source tripods and adapting to them did not sound appealing to me. I already had these empty 1 gal buckets from pool chemicals so I put them to good use

While I don't have one of these but friend of mine has one and I helped him to mount it on a tripod with bubble level and now it's just freaking awesome! The wind flag rotates on 2 ball bearings so it reacts to the wind really quick and accurately.

Thinking about making this for my backyard, my kids and I all get to enjoy the “wind flag”. LOL!!!

I have a MTM but I also have several I made out of political sign from an election (after the election) and styrofoam balls from hobby lobby and a few little pieces of hard maple I had. They work surprisingly well, better than the MTM I think. Oh, I also used strips cut from caution tape I had for the tails.

I think using a bucket filled with sand is a great idea. I'm going to try that. It would raise them some too which mine could use.
