Is anyone hunting rats with .22?

..after shooting my taipan again yesterday, im like damn I dont have this much enjoyment shooting my .177 impact (it doesnt suck, it actually is awesome between the shot count and mag size) , but I wanna enjoy every gun like I do when I shoot my Taipan so I am contemplating putting my .177 up for trade for something new to try and hopefully love, we all know the impacts can be had at anytime , theres a million of them out there..... and if im gunna own something that wont shoot accurately past 60 yards (60 yards was the max my .177 impact would do, of course because its .177) I want to be inlove with it

Why not just keep her and use it for the rats? Less expensive and it's already dialed in.

I do not like switching optics , i love buying the rifles, setting them up and being done with them. My current one is just setup awesome and I really don't want to disturb it with setting it up for night optics.
I would say to just buy another Taipan in .22 = done .

I am just wondering if 30 fpe is too much with an 18.13 grain for the job, the .177 was making 24 fpe so I guess not a terrible difference. I also think this is a great idea, just wondering if I would get a standard or long and make my compact the rat gun since I know that all taipans shoot well.

Simce you slready have a Taipan Compact, why not a .22 long so you can dial the power down or way up! I shoot rats at lower power with a .22, fuse box and vital shots seem to better anchor them than .177's do.

I think the weight transfer and the diameter of the projectile even if its at a lesser velocity is far more effective than a .177 moving faster

This has been a big thought of mine, the compact can be my rat gun

So far I have been offered an R5M Standard
Another vet compact built by mtnghost
Uragan .25

If you have the Impact, just get a .22 barrel for it and sell the .177 barrel? You were thinking of trading the gun, this way you can keep a known gun and just swap the barrel to get .22. If you use an ATN 4K Pro for NV, you can set up different profile for different rifles, then you is want to swap it around you can easily do so. I use .22 almost exclusively for rats and they do very well.

Very true about ammo diameter transferring energy even at slower speeds! mtnghosts Taipans are usually very nicely modded but it is another Compact. Edguns are nice but their triggers are not close to being as good as a Taipans. Uragans are nice, do you want a .25 cal? Maybe wait a little to see what else is offered...

All my ratting has been with .22s, my Compatto, Bantam HR, pp700sa, and currently my Atomic XR. My .22s rifles? I would set up 30 yard minimum shots. My Atomic? I’m taking rats from 10 to 25-30 yards. With my rifles I’ve taken rats out to 55 yards, with many kills in the 40-50 yard range. I like the .22 for rats, it effs them up… Good luck in your search. Like in your other thread. I’m recommending an Atomic or Ranger XR, rugged, proven pesting machines that don’t have to be babied. i know you have some sweet guns, you would appreciate the Brococks. They are the real deal.

You are wondering correctly. Sending JSB Exact Jumbo 18s at 30 FPE is definitely overkill. Though I’ve sent many 18s at rats myself. I would use the 18s when shooting rats in the 40-50 yard range. A sub 20 FPE PCP would suit for all ratting purposes out to 50 yards and opens up lots of closer range opportunities. I’m currently sending Crosman Premiers at 725 FPS, they have proven deadly on rats and other small critters out to 50 yards. Think lower power, you can do ”big things” with low power, particularly on small critters.
