I'm calling BS on scope damage

I have a Beeman R2 dual barrel, it came with a Beeman fixed 4x scope. After about 300 shots the scope was shot out. At 10 yards the zero shifted every shot resulting in a 10 round group being 6 inches wide. Looking through the objective lens I could see a lens shifted or ...... unsleeved from it's position.

I'm not sure if you know it but SWFA passed the Navy trials and was issued an "N Code". The fixed 10x is used by some Navy special forces sniper teams because of its extreme durability. They are absolutely built like a tank. Being issued an N Code also means they need permission from the Navy before they can change ANYTHING on the entire line. I did several dozen hours of research before settling on a SWFA 3x-15x by 42mm MOA Scope.

I actually asked Pyramiad Air months ago what scopes are capable of handling the double recoil of a spring pellet gun. They replied with a brand of scope around $100, UTG. They specified to search for the "True Strength" platform.

Chad,

Thanks for weighing in on this thread. I was not aware of the scopes' rating by the Navy but I guess I'm not surprised given my experience with the scope.

I chose a fixed power scope for two reasons-- I had a variable 3-9x that stayed on 9, and I wanted to mount it on a spring gun and read here on AGN that fixed power scopes tend to be more robust. Less moving parts = less chance for things to shake loose. Makes sense to me.

Mine's been mounted on a springer (HW35) that's had a few thousand rounds fired with the scope mounted-- zero issues with the scope.

it's now on a PCP-- AA 200T-- but I wouldn't hesitate to put it on any springer.

the only possible negative I can site is that it is a fairly heavy scope. I suppose that's part of the reason it's so robust!

I know this is WAY past the date of this thread but I have a fair bit of experience with inexpensive scopes on both powder burning and air guns. I have a UTG scope on a Hatsan 135qe vortex, a legendary kicker. Has never failed. The built in Picatinny helps some. Had a Simmons 22 mag scope on another kicker Remington Vantage with only scope grooves in the receiver. Both scopes are still on those guns with minimal adjustments over the years. Of course I want better on my better guns, but I'm just using what I had on rimfire and some centerfire rifles laying around.

With over 1000 rounds from my springer (Weihrauch HW35) with an "unrated" scope (SWFA SS 10x42MMQ) and no ill effects, in fact no change at all, in the scope's performance, I'm ready to call BS on the whole "scope damage from springers" trope!

Can anyone here please offer a first person example of a scope that was damaged by a spring piston air rifle when properly mounted? I've asked similar questions before and heard anecdotal evidence. Please don't offer stories that you've read or been told-- only real instances of scopes that were damaged *by you* from being used on a spring piston air rifle.

I really want to know how many instances of damaged scopes have occurred on spring piston air rifles.

Thanks for for any real world experiences you many offer!
I broke a scope that was packaged with my springer of the Rws brand .Cheap scope to begin with and had a wire reticleMy springer is a 24 FPE beast and I went with a Hawke Vantage to replace...3000 shots in and no problems .

The most Abusive "Springer" out there on scopes..... Theoben Gas Pistons!!
I have literally blown apart various scopes.. Non spring rated..within a few shots..
Broken or canted crosshairs to shearing screws off on the zoom dial or parallax adjustment.

Then came the Theoben Eliminator/ Beeman's Crow magnum
This powerhouse Gas Piston Spring should have been a scope Exploder!!
Well Theoben cure this with the Dampa Scope Mounting system
My CrowMag has a Bausch and Lomb 3x9 for 30 years now.......
