Beeman R9 First Serious Shooting - Fiasco

Finally got out to the gun club with my new 0.177 cal R9. So far so good with indoor shooting in the basement at 10m. Started today at 25 yards getting the scope (Centerpoint 4-16x40 AO) zeroed. Shot real low, not enough adjustment in the scope to get it on center. It was grouping pretty bad, got a lot of semi-decent three shot groups that were with one or two flyers for each.

I then started to notice a burnt oil smell. Ooops #1 probably should have degreased and cleaned it first.

Then noticed this...

The scope is not supposed to recoil off the rifle is it?? Also everything on the scope was loose although the reticle seemed fine...

I finally got a piece of wood and drove the scope the rest of the way off (Bring hex keys next time too...). Tried the factory open sights next. Pellets were like a shotgun pattern. I am not going to blame an excellent rifle, I was trying to hold it fairly loose and just let it do its thing. I know for a fact i'm flinching when the thing shoots. The recoil is a totally different character to PB's and PCP's. I can shoot a 30 cal PB all day with zero flinch, but thing thing gets me twitching. More practice.

Regarding the movement of the scope mount would locktite help? How do you guys do your scope mounts on springers. My mount is a simple 11mm dovetail mount matching to the factory grooves on the rifle. I was amazed that it moved as much as it did and what it did to the scope. Especially considering I had to work at it quite a bit to drive it the rest of the way off that really speaks to the type of recoil these things have.

Anyways I'm open to suggestions.

Welcome to scopes on a springer...

If you dont use the scope stop pin in the mount in one of the holes for it in the guns receiver it can and will...
I assume these are the receiver holes??

This is the underside of the scope mounts.

I don't see an option to put a pin or screw down into one of the receiver holes.

I don't mind upgrading to a better mount if anyone has any suggestions. Regards, Badger

Ya , you need a mount with the stop pin..

Theres plenty out there one or 2 piece mounts ..

Im sure you will get plenty or recommendations here.. i shoot my r9 without a scope or peeps , well all my stuff.. so i dont got good recommend suggestions... If i ever do scope i just use packaged mounts from guns that came scoped in the box..

Hmmm.... I seem to slso notice that the scope tube is slipping in the rings as well ???
It may or not. On the previous scope mount I had to put some tape around the barrel of the scope to get a good clamp with the rings. The glue from the previous tape is still on the scope. It could have moved as well, I can't say for sure.

This may be the type of mount I need. Just need to find somewhere where they have it in stock.

At GTA forum there's a heak of a lot of info on this there. Like in there German gate . For me when i stopped scoping my springers it all went to the better. Now thats just me of course in my own opinion.

All the typical hw/ r9 issues just go away and more enjoyable gun . Ya, the springer scope chase dont miss it one bit...

Anyway i like the the way your going with the rail and weaver or picatinny ring set up .. i would also invest in a toque screwdriver for gun use like " for a example".. wheeler fat wrench type.

https://www.amazon.com/Wheeler-Accu...ords=wheeler+fat+wrench&qid=1662856184&sr=8-3

That way you get things set properly to specs needed

Thanks, I have a similar tool. The open sights will delete the scope issues of course., just would have to learn to shoot it better and stop flinching.

Have an HW95 with BKL 2 piece mounts. No pin or screw and my scope has never moved. R9 has a similar 2 piece ring set up only I used Hawke Match mounts on. Had to use a small file to get the bottom flat since the Hawkes have a tapered pin, but mounted, never an issue with movement, rings or scope in the rings. You definitely need a better set of rings with 2 bolt bases or a 1 piece mount and get rid of those single screw rings you have.
The Hawkes I use. Sportsmatch T04C rings are another pretty highly recommended. Scope is your choice but I've got Hawke Airmax scopes on mine but we all have our favorite brands.
The R9 also has a Sun Optics recoil scope stop between the rings but not something I can say try since they're no longer made.

If you want to go the dovetail to picatinny route that is fine but I would cancel that order and grab a UTG DNT06 adapter from Amazon. They have some "droop" compensation built in that is really great to have on a springer, even if your gun doesn't suffer from it.

Personally I just use either a UTG one piece dovetail mount or an RWS Lockdown mount. Both are very cheap and I've never had an issue with either moving on my guns.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll stay with my present order for now (Was less than $10 & free shipping) but will probably put it on one of my other rifles. Would look good on my tacti-cool Diana Bandit carbine mutant. Will look at the UTG unit you suggest for the R9. Regards

Them 2 ring brands are recomended alot ...

Open or scoped flinching is still flinching..lol. Im proof of that ...lol

Get a set of these rings. https://us.hawkeoptics.com/tactical-ring-mounts-1-2-piece-9-11mm-medium.html
Clean ALL surfaces with alcohol wipes. With a torque wrench set the ring base to 30" lbs after positioning the stop pin for the rear ring into one of the three holes in the receiver. After adjusting for eye relief and horizonal alignment set the ring caps to 18" lbs again after cleaning all surfaces with the wipes. Easy peasy and problem solved.

MY HW95L with the same rings only for 30 mm scope tube. Solid mounting after 7K shots at 17 FPE.

Thanks, I would need a taller version. The medium height rings won't clear the objective of my scope off the barrel.

With the better brands like suggested above you get a better aluminum.

Some bargain even name brand like ugt the aluminum is soft. Too soft and screws crush on there holes and become loose as you go or the clamp part just cant gain a good grip. I use to have pictures of this issue ..

You know take a #2 pencle and put index / hash marks in spots to watch any movment i like to put them on the side i tend to be looking at when i load a pellet .. id mark to check for any slippage of the tube in the rings and base and one to watch for rotation of the tube in the ring. ( Use to have pictures of that to.). Oh well youll figure it all out ..

Well you r9 looks good , i like it ..enjoy!
