why shooting 100 yards pest's

I just do not understand the distance thing , when i was on a farm you had to get close enough to throw a stone at birds to get them to move .
Do modern birds fly off when you step off the porch 150 feet from the barn ? watching the video's one shot and poof all fly off ? when i was a kid i would shoot one and maybe a few next to it would move . But my old red rider did not make much noise and you had to get close to kill .

well, unless you have a really big place 100yd shots are not on 'pests' generally, youre just killing stuff, tje squirrel doing his thing in the pine tree 100yds away isnt a pest, your just executing him for fun lol .. there are exceptions like predators killing your livestock that can hang way out, but pests are by definition pests because theyre right up in your crap lol .. 'close in' ..

why? think about it.....

your red rider barely had enough energy to penetrate a bird, maybe a couple foot pounds of energy?
so it didnt make much noise or disturbance when the bb hit.

then take my .25 impact compact,
which is running at 58 foot pounds of energy,
when it hits a bird,
it makes a loud POP and feathers explode everywhere,

now,
i know i would probably just sit there if the dude beside me falls over,
but if he suddenly explodes....im gone!

i would think it works the same with birds lol

I'll shoot at something 100 yards because with some of my rifles I can. Normally I don't but my 22 can reach out and touch that far no problemo.

If you're against it, don't do it. But if you're upset or disapprove that I might do it, that's your matter.

I never cared to be bucketize people as snobbish hunters, lowly pesters or anything like that. If it's legal then I'm usually OK with killing critters. Of course I'm not going to shoot a bear and have it die in someone's rose garden.

Too many people here are ready to critique everyone else. It's like a mob of Karens sometimes. Not necessarily you the original poster.

Had one guy question if I shoot critters with young. Well, yes, sometimes. Especially skwirrels and coyote. What's it to you? Get lost if you don't like it was my thought.

Pests are pests where I grew up not just because they were up close. Some dug up prime grazing land (prairie). They see you coming for miles. Others were contaminating feed and appeared largely at night. Some carried disease to the various livestock. Some, like skunks, were a menace to people/pets and spread disease. I do NOT wish to be 20 yards from a skunk when I shoot it. They are 50 or more yards is close enough.

I often use the range in the mornings with my TX200 (.177). I have wildlife all around me I would not if I were using a .22lr. I have had fox, various birds and rabbits messing around, hunting or playing between me at the bench while I am shoot over them to my targets set at 50 yards. They think NOTHING of my TX200 or the sound of a pellet/slug going by for the most part.

The pests I shoot are made out of tasty meat. They are on the menu for everything with sharp teath and claws.

Those pests are in the business of not getting eaten. It is a balance of getting as close as possible without being detected and causing the pest to go into evasion mode. A calm, stationary and unaware target is a dead target.

25-40 yards I am at point blank zero. I do have a range card on my scope and I carry a range finder. 100y-150y is doable, but not preferable.

Shoot'em good

Let's put it this way. With 33 groundhog kills this year, I think I have a groundhog problem in my neighborhood! 😊

So when I glass the surrounding yards, if I see a shot at 100 yards, I'm gonna take it. My airgun is way better than I am. I'm also confident that it can deliver the power to kill humanely at that distance.

Here is a 92 yard shot on a groundhog with the FX Maverick VP .30 cal shooting FX Hybrid Slugs. Forgive the poor video quality, I hadn't had time to focus the ATN X-Sight 4K Pro's front bell.
