Impact MK3 700 mm POI shift Fix

I read an old post where the POI shift in the Impact cold be because the loose tolerance between the liner an the tension sleeve at the end of the barrel allowing it to move around because of barrel whip. Hum.... made sense to me. In fact I was surprised after checking mine and found that there was considerable difference between OD of barrel liner and ID of tension sleeve , approximately .005" The fix that was recommended was to wrap the end of the liner with Teflon tape or box tape to take up the difference. So I tried both methods and for a few shots it worked well then The POI shifts started to return. Pellets started to move all around again. This result was the same for all projectiles. Fresh tape, good groups then things went to hell again. I have owned my M3, 25cal since January 2022. I have owned the 1st, 2nd and 3 generation (M3) Impact. I have struggled with POI shift in all 3. The worst being the M3. I have shot approximately 15 tins of FX 34 grains.10 tins of 25.39 grains and 8 boxes of NSA slugs using both superior and superior heavy liners with CF sleeves. I ran speeds for 800 FPS to 1005 FPS and different reg pressures to valve combination. I was able to achieve ES 5, SD 1.7 within the various projectiles. The POI shift was as much 1.5 to 2 inches at 100 yards and 1 inch at 50yds. I believed the material used began to compress after a 100 or so shots allowing the barrel to shift around again. So i decided to cut a piece of .002 feeler gauge to the proper length, curl it around a pencil and insert it into the sleeve at the farthest point. I lightly sanded the edge to remove any lip created by the scissors. I installed the sleeve with just a slight amount of pressure against the liner. I went to one of my previous tunes for the 34 gr MK11 @ 930 fps, SD 2.5, ES 5,1st reg @ 130, 2nd reg @105, mic @ 11, mic wheel was recalibrated to 3 and 8 respectively then turned to 11, valve wide open. Now 50 yard groups are one slightly ragged hole and 100 yard groups are one ragged hole to 3/4" in calm conditions (Texas). This has remained consistent for a week now. I shoot about 3 mags a day. The NSA 29.5 @ 970fps and the 26.8 @ 1005fps showed the best results before POI shift started again. I will be ordering more and try again If my luck holds with the 34's. the only aftermarket part I have is the Saber Tactical TRS rail and a home made bag rider. I was already starting to look at Daystate for my next gun, LOL https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/point-of-impact-shift-fix-for-fx-impact-and-crown-and-others/

Hello!
When you state "tension sleeve" are you referring to the carbon fiber liner sleeve that is made to stiffen the liner? I'm assuming that is it? And "at it's farthest point", what does that mean? On feeler gauge piece at each end?
Many recommend gluing that carbon fiber sleeve onto the liner itself taking up any slack as you describe.
Thanks!

I meant the Tension nut that holds the liner in place. The cut shim was curled around a pencell to allow me to insert it inside the tension nut then push it forward till it sits against the shoulder of the tension nut. I tried a .003 shim but it was to tight, perhaps a .0025 would also work but my old gauge did not have one. A full sleeve turned on a lathe would be better but I don't have access to one . If some one out there could make one I would buy a couple. Also just shot about 20 shots this morning and still holding zero. Also I used a piece of 600 sand paper to remove my burs around the out side end of the liner. I did not bond the CF sleeve to the liner. My sleeve fit pretty tight to the liner so I did not bond. Hope this helps some one with the same problem. Amazon has a feeler gauge for $6.97 with closer graduations.

Zack, There cold be many fixes for this problem if you were a machinist. like a taper at the inside of the tension nut that centers the barrel. Try your Idea and see, but I would not use any material that could compress. I don't think all Impacts have this problem. but we do known that tolerances on the M3 were improved according to Matt Duber.

I shot quite a bit early this morning before the wind came up. The rifle is still shooting great. I am almost afraid to switch to the Heavy Superior barrel and run the risk of loosing my accuracy LOL. I have a home made bag rider I made from a 3/8 " aluminum rod that cost around $7.00 that works great and looks much better ST on the internet. I will post some pic when I get a chanced.

As you said, there cold be many fixes.
I did not glue/bond my CF sleeve to the liner neither,
.25 I wrap the liner with thinnest (blue) teflon tape - not to overlap - and that made a snug fit.
For the front portion I use orange teflon tape it is a bit thicker and makes a snug fit with the tensioning nut. I don't think I could wrap a 0.01-0.02 shim there inside.
I was also tinkering making a female taper inside the tension nut also making a male taper on the liner nose, that would also center the liner.
For a .22 liner I replaced the nut orings to NBR90.

I shot a 10shot group this morning at 9am here in Texas. This was the first 10 rounds out of the gun. The flyer was the first round out of the gun and the remaining 9 were about were about 1/2" group @100 yds . There was a slight wind 3 mph wind from right to left. The night before I removed liner tension nut to check the liner to make sure that the liner was still indexed correctly. My .003 shim as I stated earlier was in fact a .oo5 shim. In conclusion I believe this was the fix that I needed.
