48 hours with the Ranger XR in 22 cal

Tuesday i received the Ranger XR, minus the grub screw for the trigger blade to keep from moving on the trigger post, but AOA is taking care of me by sending out a grub screw priority mail.

However, I can still use the gun and I have been looking at some shot to shot consistency and how many actual shots I can get fro a charge within the “optimal” shot curve. AOA says up to 20 shots, well yup it is 20 in the rated range from a full charge, maybe 22 before the FPS of the pellets starts to dive.

Pellets I have been toying with between Zoom work meeting today are as follows:
  1. JSB Jumbo Heavy
  2. JSB Hades
  3. H&N 18s
  4. Crossman Premier HP
I have been mostly concerned about shot to shot consistency in FPS for the optimal power band. I have 8-9 yards to use for my endeavor. I mounted a Athlon scope, the one that was on my Ranger XR in 177, which will then move to the Prophet II comes later in the year. Anyways, for now it works great, though yes big for the platform.

I tapped in the pellets so they were snug. I am not factoring which one the gun likes most, i can determine that with 9 yards, this will come Saturday.

Also, my Accushot Atlas bipod showed up, the knock off is now forgotten. Anyone want a free bipod? You only pay shipping PM if interested. (Yes to me I notice a difference).

So here is my findings: Power range hovered in the 15 FPE for the Crossman and 16-17 FPE for the JSB and H&N pellets.

The JSB Jumbo Heavies were the most consistent with STD for 20 3.7 FPS. Hades and 18s 5-6 ish FPS and Crossman a STD 12 FPS. Will this match up on the target grouping Saturday, NO IDEA. I am praying the gun likes the hades because I like using them so much in the field.

The ranger with its new digs. Also, can’t remember but I swear the cocking handle on 22 ranger is longer than the 177 ranger. It is super nice too having the length.

Are you filling the Ranger XR to 250 BAR? Because I get at least 30 shots from a full fill at my current settings… Steve at AEAC shows various tunes in his video, all over two magazines on a fill. He has a 16 FPE tune with close to 40 shots! What is that “optimal” shot curve you’re referencing? Isn’t the Ranger regulated? So from a full fill to the regulator “set point” is the optimal curve. At least that is what I understand.

Haven’t touched it since it came. Here is the shot string and I was like at 230 bar. Also, AOA says 20 shots for the ranger and 20 - 100 for the atomic. I will look at Steve’s video, but several times with all pellet types. I was hoping for 25, but it drops to 600 fps
If the Ranger and Atomic are basically the same platform. How can there be such a difference in shot count between the two? Not possible. Either way, good luck on Saturday amigo…

Hey Blackpaw Nice spread and S.D. for the spector ll
My atomic arrived with a long charging Handle as well. I couldn't really get used to it because it hit /rubbed on
my hand [ big hands I guess] pluse my Sniper has a small charging handle which I'm used to. So I requested a replacement
and AOA the GREAT company they are sent me a replacement.
Not sure this will apply in your case but when I received mine the hammer spring was adjusted to max didn't really
help my shoot count so I backed it off. OfCourse it did increase the shot count and also quieted some I have the 25 cal so my numbers
help you fun gun and a hoot to shoot

@bink2 thanks, as @L.Leon suggested and you I will play with the hammer spring but I still want to keep it the 16-17 FPE range, I will give up a few shots for that additional power.
Don’t go chasing power with the Ranger XR… As is, my Atomic XR has surprised me with what supposed “low power” can do. Mine is doing great at 16.9 FPE at the muzzle with CPHPs. Just under 9 FPE at 50 yards.

Played with the hammer spring and well, no way no way i can match any of the speeds Steve had on the atomic review. The highest I could get with the Hades is 690, his minimum recommended speed. Anything above 15 grain, forget 700 fps. I reset the spring. Nope nope, still not in that “700-720” sweet spot for Hades Steve talks about. Shot count I might be able to squeak to 25, but as far as it goes, this is a 2 magazine fill gun.

@SorenDrost sir I love the platform, just confused that my Ranger is so less efficient than PPLs atomics shot per shot , fps vs fps. I know I need to find the sweet spot with the regulator to hammer spring adjustment but honestly, minor adjustment seem to play little difference, even 1/4 turn do little.

@Blackpaw, am also perplexed as to why your Ranger would be less efficient. My Atomic came in at 725 fps sending 14.3 Premiers according to the printout from AOA. I was able to match the provided numbers in my chrono session. I’m exclusively shooting the CPHPs in my Atomic XR. Sub 40 yards they’re getting it done on pests. So all your new numbers are from a 250 BAR fill?

The regulator must be bad because now it is bleeding air when I charge. I’m sending the gun back to AOA. This is ridiculous!!! I adjust them hammer spring next to nothing happens. Not getting even close to your Atomic or Steve’s tune. I’ll call them tomorrow and I don’t want to say ask, or request. I will just say give me a new one this is Trash

I’m going tomorrow to the field but with the uragan. The ranger will not be joining
You just got spoiled with your Prophet, Get it out of the box and shoot like crazy...
Just kidding No gun not even your 199 dollar PCP should leak for at least a month or two.. Good luck with fast AOA repairs.
Mike
i fill it to point then bleed and the regulator valve won’t close. Thus draining the regulator of air. Plus the hammer spring adjustments has little to no influence on velocity. I do a half to full clockwise turn. Nothing, the gun only gets louder. Yes I’m picky but when you spend this money you are owed to get what you pay for the first time, if not. Don’t repair replace. I got the gun Tuesday not a month ago. It hasn’t left the hall close o bedroom through bathroom shooting range since it was unboxed it. Like i said It will not be joining me tomorrow in the field, it is being boxed up and sent back to AOA.

Peter, am bummed that this went so bad for you. AOA should make it right, but you still lose use of it this weekend. Punish those pests with the Uragan instead. Hope this doesn’t sour you on the Ranger XR.
