What I shot at 2022 EBR 100Y BR

As always at Rio Salado, the wind separated the wheat from the chaff. I decided in early August to stop shooting .22 RD Monsters and shift to .25 King Heavy.

So I ordered a new .25 Daystate Red Wolf HP in Walnut that I named “Bullseye”. The gun is tuned to shoot .25 Heavy at about 950 fps on the Medium Power setting. It is supported by an Accutac bipod, topped by a Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60x scope, and fed by a MidWest Elite Airguns high capacity magazine.

Not one flyer the entire week. Superb accuracy. Two weeks prior to EBR I had a morning with almost no wind. I shot three ten shot groups back to back at 100 yards, and each one could be covered by a quarter.
I also added a PRS lower rail, and a 2.5# brass weight to keep the little jump straight back instead of up.

Plus that Walnut stock is just gorgeous. I know it’s a cliche, but you can buy an off the shelf pellet rifle and compete well at the highest levels as is, out of the box. I lost to a VERY HIGHLY modified FX Crown and a CUSTOM Thomas HP-X. Trust me, those two guns were no more accurate then mine. I lost because those two guys were better at reading wind than me and it had nothing to do with my gun’s accuracy.

An interesting factoid. In 2019 when I won Sportsman I shot a 217, and Nicolay won Pro with a 225. This past Sunday, I shot 216 for third, and Nicolay shot 225 for second. Things that make you go hmmm.
I’m case you’re wondering, that 216 was MUCH better than the 217, winds were significantly harder this year…

Congrats again Mike! I see you STILL never took Nick's advice about only shooting 4 shot groups :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Thanks Gerry and everyone else for the kind words.

My quest over the Winter will be to learn how to read wind flags like the top two 100Y BR shooters. Without that l’ll never get to the next level. The gun is good enough to shoot over 230 even in those conditions if I do my part.

My current endeavor as well.

The translation from flag input to hold point on target is the BIG sticking point for me. The unexplained dive or the errant swirl that should not matter....... frustrating at best.

I have picked up some great points from Mike Niksch and his posts, but there is no substitute for shooting A LOT of pellets and recording the effects on them for reference.
I am slowly starting to understand that a simple 90 degree left cross wind is a whole lot more than just hold off to the left!

Nice shooting Centercut, I had no luck with.22 MRD’s in my RedWolf’s or my Raw so I ordered .25 RAW a year ago much more consistent and starting to regain some confidence in longer range shooting.
I can't really say I had no luck with .22 RD Monsters in my .22 Red Wolf (Bleu), but time and time again a flyer would hurt my score.
- It happened the Team Event we had in Utah July 2021. A shot on the second to last row spiraled into the "4" ring, and dropped me from a probable 2nd to 8th.
- It happened at 2021 EBR 75Y #2, where I had a horrible round going, but the #1 was very good. My third to last shot was a horrible flyer, missing the target altogether for a "3". Had this been even a 7, I would have qualified for the 100Y final.
When they are good, they are really good. But no matter how much attention and methodology you pay to sorting, they will eventually break your heart. Plus, the standard weight deviation is an order of magnitude worse than the .25 King Heavy. I decided this August, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I know this EBR my 75Y #2 first two rows were really bad, two 6's and two 7's, the rest 9s. I started to get discouraged. Stood up, stretched, took a few deep breaths, and sat back down and proceeded to run off 15 straight 10s. Shot a 230 which was enough to get me in the finals.

Great job, thanks for sharing the gun info.

Curious, what the device is next to the magazines and what do you use the tube on the rail for, behind the bipod?
The device next to the mags is a MidWest Elite Airguns high capacity magazine. Holds 29 shot. The piece that was is wrapped in titanium color CF is a 1” brass bar 2.5 pounds. Keeps the recoil straight back vice jumping up a little.

Great shooting and a great gun! A couple of questions for you:
1) Did you use flags?
2) Did you position so you could see them through your scope?

Thanks, and it was an awesome event! Good luck next year and I'm sure you've already started getting ready...:)

Steve
Thanks Steve,

Yes, I used two Graham wind flags, one at 20 yards and one at 50 yards. I set them so I could see them from my left eye, I could not see them through my scope, which was set at 40x.

Yes, I'm embarrassed to admit that I've already installed a 700cc bottle to replace my 580cc bottle... I only had to refill once but I shot about 75 sighters, and allowed my gun to run down twice to 177 bar. I shoot the gun at about 70 FPE. And I will be practicing with flags more this year than I have in the past...
