Finally got my project done and now I’m starting my range. A little history. This is what I started with. After contractor got tossed off site. CF8DC285-2C5C-44A9-AFA5-5488B035B98B.jpeg This is 3+years ago. A pile of rock and earth.
Going to do this in parts, pictures are scattered.
I bought a 20 ton excavator and dump truck, used for 2+ years and sold, best toys ever.

When I sold the Caterpillar I got a Kabota, it’s like having 3 Hercules work with you.

I can get 38 yds. from my covered porch where I have 2 Stable tables.

What is the black, fabric or is that plastic?

The proper material for the job would have been a non woven geotextile. It would help the boulders hold back the earth.

Hard to tell in the pictures, is there a way for water to drain other than going down the berm, over or through your boulders? That would help a lot for longevity.

wish I lived where I could build something like that. I’m envious.

I had a 12 ft. wide roll it was like real heavy felt. Got from excavator purchase.
This stuff looks like a cheap tarp. Supposedly weed control, good enough for the girls I go out with.
Curious now about drainage, we get some nasty rains. Should be good. Crow

Sounds like the right stuff — heavy felt is a good way to describe a non woven geotextile and 12 foot wide roll is pretty common

what state are you in — does the ground freeze?

G’day Crow, your berm looks great. My suggestion would be if you have a few dollars laying around I would build a hard wood wall probably from railway sleepers behind the rocks. It could be about 5 foot tall and and wide as you want it to go. You could hang your targets off the timber and make ledges to sit targets on. Sort of like a retaining wall. Those rocks could form a path at the bottom of the wall to keep your feet or shoes clean when changing targets especially if you get a lots of rain and it would look neat and tidy as well.

My range had a low spot in front of the doorway and parking lot. Someone installed a "French Drain". Smarted invention ever. He dug a pit about five or six feet wide and then a channel going down hill for run off. He filled the pit and channel with about a foot of crushed rock / gravel and then topped it off with dirt. Eureka! No more standing water in the parking lot! Probably an idea older than the hills but I am still impressed with how well it works and continues to work. Might come in handy Crow.

Sold them almost exactly a year ago. Last picture. 85FB5682-0C78-42C2-BC77-507FA64529EB.jpeg What a toy, played with it for 2 1/2 years. Handy to have. The trick is to not have any breakdowns. Very very pricey. I was lucky.
