My first and only 250

But not with my gun.

I visited my friend Mike N for a day at his place.
Part of that was hanging out and talking about fun gun stuff. We always enjoy each others company and we both needed a break from our hectic routine's.

Another part was upping the velocity on my Thomas HPX named SLUGSURELY for the 42gr slugs I swage, as well as to check for precision at higher speeds.

Then he asked me if I wanted to try a N50 card with his newest iteration of the HPX slugger. Man what a BR rifle, such a laser beam!
It was fairly tricky with the wind that day being 3 or so in the afternoon and 7-11 mph so I thought I would be embarrassed by the end of the card because I'm far from a good BR shooter.
I started shooting sighters and Wow those slugs were going into the 10 once I dialed a few clicks and got a feel on where to hold as I watched the flags. It took me longer than the normal 20 minutes but I pulled off my best score yet! I thought for sure I had a 249 when looking through the scope, which would have still been my highest score shooting slugs to date, but Mike plugged the #11 bull and it barely touched the black line. 250 12x it is!

Thanks Mike, I appreciate your time, willingness to help in the many ways you do, and your ever evolving rifles are some of the most awesome creations in the world of guns I've had the privelidge to experience!

Thanks you all, pretty fun day!

Mike B, yes it was a .22 cal plug but I don't know the exact diameter, its whatever is the official size for 22 cal slugs. Shows how much I know about N50???

Thanks Tommy. Nope there's no way I'd shot a 250 with pellets in the same winds, I would have needed to aim all the way over to the next bull, well I would have dialed most of the windage but....
With Mike's 38gr slugs the farthest I held was almost to the square edge of the box encompassing the bull(sure was happy I guessed right?!) but most often I was just out of, or on the inside of, the black ring.

Thanks for the info on your holds. Pretty amazing hitting that many 10’s holding on the box line or outside ring. Your wind / flag reading skills are excellent. I need a “Dr. Spock Vulcan mind meld” to improve mine.

I just got lucky on a few wind guesses is all. Since the master was watching I tried harder than normal as well ;). Mike told me to hedge my bets by trying for 10's vs X's. In other words if I could clip the edge of a 10 that would be better than a say a 248 14x, but I don't think I could have done this good a card with anything other than Mike's gun or an equivalent status 22rf with expensive ammo tested for that gun.

If I didn't have so much money into SURELY via the custom walnut stock I'd sell it and order one these newer versions right away (that is if he's still selling them) because at one point not too far back he wasn't going to sell any more!

Awesome card man.
It wouldn't be entertaining if there weren't a few 'sneakers' in there calling for close examination with the plug!

Although you were behind top flight, Tier 1 equipment, ima gonna say that you displayed some mad skill operating it.
I am excusing the fact that you had Yoda right there whispering his hints and tricks to you, but no way your average camper could sit down and run a 250 card with that gear.

Outstanding effort and what an excellent showcase for the capabilities of yourself and the platform!

Don't sell Surely man, that rifle is too cool.

Thanks Chuck.

Ha, kinda iffy and entertaining yes, but I'd trade a cleaner looking non disputable 250 any time, and wouldn't mind them all in the X either. :D

Mike tried to teach me to aim up and down to compensate for vertical deflection based on what the flags were doing but that's something I'd need to practice for so I chickened out. I was on my own as far as where to aim in the wind.

His gun rides so smoothly on his rest that it comes back a 1/4" from recoil each shot but the tension required to push the slug into the snug chamber pushes the rifle forward to its stop on the rest so there's no need to have to think about pushing the gun back intentionally. With my rest and SURELY I need to remember to push it back every time with a shove which I forget to do sometimes.

Almost every part of his system is above and beyond what I'm used to, even as good as SURELY is.
We did find out that SURELY shoots better in his chassis system and also found out I need to have SURELY pillar bedded pretty badly. Walnut looks pretty but it's not the best choice around for a stable platform for an action to sit in like aluminum is, or a higher quality composite stock, heck I still think composite stocks should be pillar bedded.

I'm going to have my Anschutz 22rf pillar bedded as well.

The auto reset in the rest feature is awesome.
I am betting that it was by design VS being a happy accident. Not much seems to slip by Mike where it pertains to performance.

SURELY deserves a spa treatment. Pillars and epoxy bedding compound for the win!

I had my best results in composite stocks where the stock was built around an action specific V block. Rock solid.
