Monday, a good day to be cocked...

Out of the curiosity of a few, and my own, I'll take on this task.

My relatively new (about 6 months old) Taipan, Veteran Compact, in .22 cal., I do not have any idea how long it sat on the shelf at the dealer.
I will take on the task of cocking, letting it sit for 7 days (+/- 3 hours), and shooting it. I'll keep track of all obvious parameters of the very lightly-scientific test.

One note - the sight was changed a while back. Just full disclosure !
Also, because it had not been shot in some time, I did put a few rounds through it before the test began, so the gauge needle is further off of the 3000psi. But, the tell, will be between the two photos that I will post.

1. I've topped off the cylinder. As verified with the 2" gauge on storage my air cylinder.
2. I put three shots through it. With the pellet speed as measured with my MagnetoSpeed, Ver.3., as measured in fps.
3. I cocked the gun (fourth round), putting a JSB, 18.1 gr. pellet into the breach, and put the safety "on". I never use the safety's !
4. I've put the gun behind the bedroom door, standing upright, barrel up, the barrel is lightly protected with a sock to keep rocks out. Only me and two cats live here, so no one will mess with the gun.
5. The gun will sit, undisturbed for 7 days, +/- about 3 or so hours.
6. Next Monday, after lunch, I'll verify the pressure in the guns cylinder.
7. I'll reinstall the Chronograph onto the barrel.
8. I'll shoot three rounds into my foam target, recording the three speeds in fps.
9. Will photograph the pressure gauge, both now and after the week is up.

We'll see what the outcome is, both in any obvious pressure loss from the gun, and in fps per the MagnetoSpeed chronograph.
Will write everything on paper and take a picture of it, so all can see my findings.

Have I missed anything ?

That's one of the nicer stocks that I have seen on a Taipan. What model Red Dot and how do you like it? Thanks!
Str8 -
Not a red dot.
It's an EOTech, Holographic sight. The ring/dot is a holograph projected onto the screen. Many don't like them, mostly because they don't understand the way that they work. The ring/dot is not a "solid" picture. It's sort of a see through picture. Many misinterpret this as junk. Once I learned how they work, I now like them. I have two at this point. Yeah, not cheap, but I do like them.
If I not mistaken, our military still uses them today. I've seen pictures of our millenary guys on TV and can pick them out every now and again.

No problem, have an arsenal to choose from !

First - to say that I've done a validation check in the past on this Chronograph (Magnetospeed V3). It showed itself to be as consistent as I would expect. The company says +/- 4%, shot to shot repeatability.

Second - I did not remove the measuring bayonet from the suppressor/shroud while the gun sat for the week. This says that the measuring bayonet was left in the same location as it was last week.

Third - yeah, the photos are crappy, deal with it !

The test.

1 - As you can see by the two cylinder pressure gauge pictures, no "visible" change occured. Other than a little parallax of camera (angle change), first hand viewing of the gauge is good. But you also need to remember, that measuring in "bar", is very crude ! PSI is much more informative if you have a more detailed gauge to go with it.
So that says that overall, there is no "obvious" leaks in this gun, in any section of this gun.

2 - Possibly a tiny regulator leak (it's not creap, it's a leak!) ? The first shot is a little high compared to the other two shots. Not a lot, and within the 4% repeatability.

3 - The remainder two shots are also a little high as compared to last weeks shots. A little odd, in that the temperature in the house is within 3 degrees (78° vs 75°) of last week.

4 - I'm not going to write out the pressure details that you can see in the photos.

5 - All in all, in using THIS (Taipan Veteran Compact)...PCP rifle, it really does NOT perceptibly harm, (within the weeks time) the gun in any way, to leave a PCP gun cocked and ready to fire for, in this instance, for a period of one weeks time ! I took the time to shoot 10 more shots after I took the second picture of the readout, with the chronograph still attached to the gun. The rest of the shots were very close to what is pictured on the readout.

It appears that while the numbers are slightly farther apart than the 4% MagnetoSpeeds repeatability, that's close enough that the guns repeatability along with the chronographs repeatability are well within reason, and nothing to be concerned about. Especially considering the week that the gun "sat" ready to fire.

SO YES, per this test, leaving a PCP cocked, pellet in the breach, for one weeks time, there is no apparent/perceptible harm to the gun.
And...no...I did not fire for accuracy as I do not own any sort of bench shooting aids.
I'll let the gun sit in the no pellet in the barrel condition (!) a day or two, and do some shooting to make sure that nothing odd shows up in the shooting.

What’s the point of this exactly?
What, you don't read the AGN threads ?

Every now and again, including a week or so back, people ask..."how long can I leave my gun cocked ?"

So, curiosity got the better of me, and since no one else stepped up, I figured I'd see what happens with a long time...cocked PCP gun.

Got it now ?

My standard has a lower velocity first shot than the rest. I would venture to say mine has a bit of creep after sitting. First shot is generally 40 fps slower than the rest. My question is how are you attaching the magneeto speed to the moderator? Is there enough gap between airtube and moderator to run the strap through?
Is your standard stock? do you have a plenum?

Stock as it came from talon tunes. All I did was adjust the hammer spring tension and mark it for 880 fps for the different pellet weights I use. Doesn't really bother me as the first shot into the ground gets me back to my set speed.

I was just curious as I saw that with mine that had a powerplenum on it but don't see it with my compact...
