Best set up for shooting slugs

Hello, new here and new to PCP Airguns. I just got a FX Impact M3 sniper in .25 cal. Currently I have it shooting great with pellets but I want to shoot slugs. I’ve watched several videos and the more I watch the more confusing it gets. Some people say get a slug liner, others say standard liner. Some say slug power kit, others don‘t. Tensioned barrels etc… What do I need?

It will depend on weight slug you want to shoot. I have been told that until you get heavier than 33 grains in 25 the standard liner performs quite well.
I am going to find out. Just starting the slug quest with a 25 cal Crown MKII.
My experience with 22 slugs is similar. Up to about 25 gr the STX liner worked then the heavier I want the more the heavy liner shined, with one exception. The heavy liner in my M3 22 shoots 23 gr Zans far better than the STX liner did.

I’ve been thinking about getting a NSA sample pack and experimenting. There’s so much information out there. I’d like to see real world results and not commercials for the next ”game changer”.

A lot of us can answer your question but don’t feel like typing 30 paragraphs. Taking a trip to Slugland with an Impact has 20 highways each with 30 roads branching off them. There is not a quick answer. I will say that there are enough slugs in a sample pack to possibly have one of them raise an eyebrow. But you need a lot of them to test every possible setting and speed before you rule it out. Or, just listen to Emu.

I guess what I was looking for was needed equipment. I realize tuning is up to me. I shoot f class with powder burners so I’m used to fine tuning things. This being my first PCP, I’m just trying to filter through some of the chaff. I see from my very first post I have drawn the attention of a couple of people who have no love for FX. Yet, watching videos for years of the air gun pros, they’re all running impacts. Must be something to it.

There’s is something to it. It just takes newbie video watchers thousands of dollars to figure out why. You have everything you need to attempt slugs. A M3 absolutely does not need any more power with do dads. Depending on your standards and how many videos you watched and believed, is where things can get frustrating. The Impact with slugs battles consistency. It’s a complex gun so keeping it on point is what you focus on. The only thing you should concern yourself with out of the gate is the barrel. Stiff and tensioned. My one M3 is a .25. I also had two MKll .25’s. I consider the .25 the bastard caliber when it comes to slugs. My Impacts in .22 were much more cooperative. If you wind up having to go heavy with the slugs to attempt the results you believe are possible, then you might have to add weight to the hammer. But that’s another bunch of paragraphs.

My stock 700mm .25 m3.. with the standard superior liner included... Would shoot sub moa groups at 100y with 33.5g dish backed hollow point slugs at 940fps. It may have had the $30 carbon liner sleeve

I just did the superior heavy liner... Saber rail... Bullet Central carbon shroud and tensioner... I really love how stiff the gun is now. Haven't got to go tune it yet and try it.

Honestly.. they work great stock. But if your like me, you can't leave well enough alone

And therein lies the rub. We're all TWEAKERS!!! In my case, I spent about a year or more getting my Impact to shoot slugs and ended up with the NSA 43.5 at 890 fps, super accurate at all ranges out to 225 yards. (700mm Slug A liner, Ernest xfer port, power plenum, NSA pin probe, lighter valve spring).

But Nooooo, I couldn't let well enough alone, even though I shot a 238 on an EBR target with it at 100yards. So, I upgraded the reg to a high-pressure Huma (I was at 135 bar) so I could go to 155 bar. I also added the Tungsten hammer weight. And tensioned the barrel.

And with all this, the accuracy, ease of shooting, and consistency went downhill. Plus, my shot count went from 40 to 28 shots per 250 bar fill. I had convinced myself that 90 FPE was better than 80 FPE, and that 950 FPS was better than 890 FPS.

And I wondered, where did the Impact go that I liked so much...??? I also shot NSA 38.9 at 990 FPS, but that was no better. So now I'm pulling off the barrel tensioner, removing the tungsten hammer weight, lowering reg pressure back to 135 bar and tuning for 890 to 900 fps in the hope that I can reclaim what I had.

All I can say is - speed and power aren't always your friend, and ACCURACY TRUMPS POWER EVERY TIME!!!!

Yea man it gets to be a tricky slope..... The further you get away from the base gun the worse it gets LOL been there.

Generally the STX Superior liners (which may be different or the same as "standard" liners depending on who you ask) will shoot pellets and lighter weight slugs well. Maybe you can find some heavier slugs that will still work, but again, generally the Heavy liners will have a better chance with a wider variety of slugs. I can also suggest you think about getting the carbon fiber sleeve to help improve your "accuracy variety" as it will help you get more consistent barrel harmonics across a range of ammo. As noted above, figure out the weight range you want to shoot and the type of slug and the speed, and that will help you determine if you need to go with more power parts and/or Heavy liners etc. For reference my 25 Cal shot the NSA 0.250" 33.6 grain slugs at ~925fps @~120Bar, and I have a Huma tensioner kit, TP, power tuning kit, and slug probe; 700mm Heavy liner.

This should be on page one of the owners manual. To add to what you said is this. The only time you need to press for more speed is if your barrel and projectile NEED it. If it doesn’t, like in the case above with the guy shooting Hybrids, you start moving backwards instead of moving forward. If your gun shoots great at xxxFPS, moving forward is leaving it alone and enjoying it. You can’t have established distance settings on your turret or burned into your brain if you are always screwing with the gun chasing misinformation.
