.22 Daystate Red Wolf Performance and Maintenance Review

Up for discussion this time is my .22 Daystate Red Wolf, originally purchased in 2019 from Ken Hicks at SPAW. Ken set it up to shoot three different pellets, each on a different power setting, though I don't think I have ever shot anything through it but the JSB Jumbo Monster Redesigned 25.39 gr pellets, as my dope chart indicating scope clicks is predicated on the utilization of this pellet.

This rifle was one of the earlier rifles that had a probe/magazine issue. It also encountered a wiring issue relatively early on. Shane at AOA promptly fixed the electrical issue under warranty, as well as pinned out the magazine actuating probe. Until recently, I shot it utilizing a single shot loader adapter, or on occasion, CARM magazines. That problem has now been rectified with the release of the new Daystate flip open magazines and the tests shown below utlized the new mags.

About a year ago, I blew a breech seal out. The members of this forum talked me through seal acquisition and replacement, and it didn't turn out to be a big deal.

No good deed often goes unpunished,. This rifle was performing perfectly until I was in the middle of this annual maintenance review, and going to charge the battery, I accidentally pulled the wiring harness connector leading to the circuit board loose from the very delicate wires. Calling Shane at AOL, he gave the usual great professional service, talking me through how to make the repair myself and sending me the needed wiring loop.

I have a real love/hate relationship with this rifle. Without a doubt, it is one of the most smooth, laser accurate rifles ever manufactured. I just feel uncomfortable with the electronics and find myself feeling at somewhat of a loss when something goes afoul. My Daystate Wolverine, RAW, and certain FX rifles seem to shoot nearly as accurate, without having the delicate electronics to be concerned with. I never say never, but at this point, I am not certain I would buy another one, even with all of its great attributes and AOA's tremendous service.

The test data can be found below. This rifle is now certifiably ready for another year of service.

The electronics are anything but touchy. I take mine out in the winter all the time and have never had any issues.

It is just as reliable as any other rifle
I didn't get the impression that he thought the electronics were touchy. But when something does occur, as it invariably will, he doesn't feel as comfortable with the maintenance or repair. I also have a Red Wolf. Mine has been totally reliable, but I also lack the same comfort with it as I have with my mechanical rifles.

Unless the design and software are up to a certain point electronic stuff is more hassle than it’s worth.

- setup and select profiles from my phone
- non optical built in chrono as optical version will get lead dust blinded in no time
- store my shot string and history and viewable from my phone
- wide range of adjustments from sub 10 FPE to 70-80 fpe
- wide range of advanced adjustment for hammer strength and dwell time
- software update…….you guessed it, from my phone wirelessly
- Inexpensive replacement components/board as micro controllers are not expensive

Until then I’ll stick with mechanical guns.

Thanks for the clarification, ELH. You are exactly correct in your interpretation of what I intended to convey. The Red Wolf is a beautiful, stable, and obviously highly competitive rifle. I am glad I own one. As previously stated, I am just not certain I would purchase another one.
Gottcha!

I have had to replace the battery on mine, though I do a TON of RC things as well, so that was easy enough to get.

Like you I love my RedWolf, though now I find myself "collecting" the EdGun R5M rifles lol

Free will is just that.
Obviously you are far beyond currently available, electronically-controlled air rifles. Hopefully in a couple centuries, humanity will catch up with you.

Basically all my cheap chinesium electronic gizmos from amazon are like that, airgun is no different but they/daystate obviously don’t have the right engineer. Someone on AGN already made something close to modern standards with just a few weeks of tinkering, even has built in bluetooth and wifi for remote configuration.

Being in tech I don’t agree with how daystate designed their systems including how they designed the D/A wolf. The fact that I need a 400 dollar heli board which voids warranty to get to any sort of flexibility is a big no for me at 2800 dollars in 2022. At least D/A wolf has more settings out of box. Electrification in theory should be cheaper as there are far fewer parts and features are software driven. If I can update my 60 dollar wireless cameras remotely over wifi then why can’t I do that with a 3000 dollar gun that uses similar commodity circuit boards…….obviously my cheap cameras have more advanced/better circuit boards.
