New to me Hw95 Field Pro review

I picked up this barely used 22 caliber Hw95 Field Pro from another forum add. The gun was originally purchased from AoA 2/21' First impressions were the gun was flawless and I was (and still am) very happy with my purchase. The gun doesn't suffer the typical binding cocking arm as many later Hw95 family guns do. It's lightly dieseling. The chronograph shows 14.66 FTTs averaging 679 with an extreme spread of 8 and standard deviation of 2. The guts are probably good. The barrel pivot is on the tight side. Lock up is very good. It's twangy as all hell so there some sort of a kit in its future. I'll upgrade the piston seal to a Vortek at the same time.

It has the Luxus style stock that I like very much. It also has the threaded barrel and weight. I like that it has no rear sight holes in the breech

It came with a 3-9x40 Weihrauch AO scope mounted on Sportsmatch T02C rings. The rings can stay but the scope has an odd brown tint so it's gonna have to go. I'll probably end up putting a 3-9x40 Airmax scope on it. I have them on my 20 cal R9, 177 Hw95 and 22 R1

Some basic accuracy testing at ten yards in the basement shows promise. I'm looking forward to getting it set up to my standards and shooting it proper distances on my Arkansas property.

Not too long ago I proclaimed here I was done buying airguns but I'll gladly eat crow for this one. It'll round out my Hw95 family collection nicely.

Good choice. I picked up my Field Pro in .22 calibre about 7 years ago and I plan on keeping it. Your velocity sounds like it's just a little low. You should be able to break the 700 fps barrier with that weight pellet. Since you said it was twangy I would definitely take it apart and check the spring. Then I would get rid of the factory grease and relube it with a proper moly paste.
I say check the spring because as much as I love the HW95 my experience with the factory springs has not been very good. They broke in both my rifles.
Since you mention getting a tune kit I'll say I've had very good results with the ARH Hornet springs in both of my HW95s. I did not get the whole kit I just bought the springs. I had to trim down the factory spring guides with a dremel to make them fit. Also added Vortek piston seals to both of them.
Don't be to quick to toss that factory scope. I don't know which one comes with that rifle these days but mine lasted 5 1/2 years before it died. I wish the factory springs would have lasted that long.

My AoA HW95L .22 was acquired 8/2020 & I installed an ARH kit with a Vortek seal to resolve a dieseling problem due to factory over oiling/greasing. Recent numbers.

FPS = Feet Per Second, MPS = Meters Per Second, FPE = Foot Pounds of Energy.
To convert to Joules multiply FPE by 1.3558, Joules to FPE multiply by .7376
To convert meters per second, MPS, to FPS = 1M x 3.28084.
To convert feet per second, FPS, to MPS = 1F x .3048.
FPE Formula is Pellet weight (gr) x FPS x FPS divided by 450240 or 450436.7.

I'm sure you'll like it. My 177 Hw95 was my first Weihrauch and started my airgun dysfunction. The 95 family guns work very well in all three common calibers. I love my 177 Hw95 as much as I first got it. At 900 fps with lead pellets it's a Lazer. It's tied my 97 for my best 50 yard groups. A little less than half inch. I like flat shooting rifles and it's my flatest shooting air rifle. Nailed a starling the first year I got it at 104 yards IIRC. Good Luck with the new gun.

Thanks. I'll tear it down and see what's up inside. It's making 15 fpe which is close to right. I'm not real worried. As long as the compression tube is good it'll end up okay.

I concur. I love the flatter trajectory of the .177 vs the .22. My HW97 at 14.5ish fpe spits the JSB 8.44 at just under 900 fps, perfect.

Not only is there a larger margin for holdover error but it seems to me that a faster pellet has to have less dwell time and thus better accuracy from a springer.

My 97 shoots 8.44s in the 860-870 range and is a real nice balance of accuracy and power for me. My lighter 177 95 runs a little hotter so it takes a little more concentration to shoot as well as the 97, but it can. It's more a field rifle than the 97 anyway.

Very nice. I really like the look of the Field Pro. If that package had been available I’d have bought it rather than the Luxus. Stock internals and my power numbers are just a few tenths below Deerstalker’s. I believe you’ll like it. I actually prefer mine to Kim’s HW50. And I like her 50 a lot so that’s saying something. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
