There are no 16x scopes that range well from 40-55. I have two Athlon Helos 4-20x50 that work kinda OK and a 6-24x50 Hawke Airmax that is not quite as good. I have owned Hawke Sidewinders, two Sightron 10-50x60 field target scopes that are used by a lot of shooters in field target but not mid priced. I tried several other brands. Some are better than others but there is a learning curve with all of them. Some range better from near to far and some far to near. Put a 6" minimum sidewheel on what ever one you like and practice, practice, practice. Sorry for being the Debbie downer but l have spent a lot of money trying to find the holy grail hft scope. I'm not sure it exists. Don

My Hawke Airmax 6-24x50(earlier model) ranges great at 16x from 10 to 40 yards. You can pretty consistently get your 45 yards but past that, your own your own. After a year participating in Field Target, I've been performing well with it and have been advised from some seasoned pros that I'll need to start learning to bracket to get my far ranges better(since this mythical magic ranging scope doesn't exist! 🦄🤣)

I used an Athlon argos g2 and Hawke sidewinder today and they both ranged well. Yes the sightron snaps in and was by far better. However I had no problems with ranging today even though we had rain for the duration of our matchThatsI tried the Athlon Argos
So, did you clean the course? Quite a feat in the rain. I bought an Argos but sent it back due to critical eye relief. Don

The misses were my own doing not a ranging issue. For people getting into the hobby or on a limited budget the argos G2 and sidewinder are more than adequate and range just fine. The course was a long one and I didnt have any errors ranging them. It disproves your statement as others have also. Yes a sightron is even better, but to make such a bold statement of "There are no 16x scopes that range well from 40-55." Is inaccurate.

Just a question, how do you know your misses were not bad ranging? Did you double check the yardages with a range finder? I was just stating what I and many others have found after buying countless scopes to find there is no holy grail scope at 16x. If you have found one , that is outstanding! l would expect to see you on the podium at the next national championship. Don

why the need to be snotty with your replies? its really not needed.

Refer to the AGN rule #1

Not being snotty. Why are you being a ******* by saying I am giving false information? I was just giving my opinion and the opinions of a bunch of field target shooters. Most have searched for the the holy grail 16x scope since they were able to get the BOG to change from 12x. Why are a lot of field target shooters trying to get the BOG to go to 24x. Is it perhaps because ranging at 16x is mostly a crap shoot past 40 yards? My response was JMHO and you are intitled to yours, but really don't like to be called a liar so I will defend myself when challenged. Don

I suggest you learn to read as nobody called you a liar. It was stated that your bold statement of "There are no 16x scopes that range well from 40-55" was inaccurate. Thats HARDLY calling you a liar. Others have also stated it was inaccurate based on their experience. Yet you feel the need to interject your rude, snide, condescending comments into the discussion that arent needed and certainly dont add to it.

I gave you an example of 2 scopes I used in the match yesterday that certainly ranged well enough to allow for good scores. Its easy to know when a miss is due to a ranging error or something else. We had poor conditions for our match yesterday, worse conditions than the nationals held in ohio a couple weeks ago. The winner of the match shot a 52/60 with a hawke sidewinder on his redwolf. You cant do that if you arent ranging well.

Is it easier to range at higher magnification? Of course. But you can still range well at 16x. Some scopes do it better or easier than others. One reason the sightron is so liked.

check the scope used on posted equipment lists from the bigger matches. Its not just the ranging... do you like the reticle? can you work the dials and knobs within the time allotted? are they repeatable? eye relief? Even if it ranges well but your uncomfortable with it, it wont help the shot
Also, learn to range find with the reticle. Itll help at all distances.....

Okay ,now l can't read! You said my statement was "inaccurate". Is that like wrong as you lied? Dude shoot what you want and suggest any scope you want but leave me out of your comments. The last time l looked, this country still has free speech. Who said my comments aren't needed. ***Moderated content: personal attack removed ****

This is exactly what l was trying to say but dan_house said it much better.
