Skout Skout Epoch Problem

A problem popped up today. After about 40 shots the cocking lever became really stiff. I found the shuttle screw in the front of the cocking lever had backed out. Tightened that up and all was well.

But before I found that, I tried to remove the barrel to see what was up with the shuttle/lever. I cannot get the barrel out. It seems like the ratchet won’t completely release. I’ve tried several times. It won’t come out. I tried to remove the ratchet thumb screw but I can’t that out. I hate to put a pliers on it and force it and scarring it up.

Has anyone ran into this? Any ideas?

Did you contact Skout?

It does un latch. I can move it about 1/32”, and it stops, like a hard stop. Push it back in(1/32”) and pull again only to stop again. Like I said, it’s a hard stop in and out. Seems like the ratchet is not releasing completely. I’d like to pull the ratchet thumb screw and try to free it up further but don’t want to mar it up or break it off.

The collet is loose.

Maybe something jammed in the transfer port?

If so, I’d engage the latch, remove the liner and then try to unscrew the shroud from the thimble. Then you would have access to the screws to separate the whole assembly.
Appreciate that, never thought of it. My weekend is over now and will probably hear from Skout before I can work on it again. I will update when it’s solved. I'm sure it's something simple, most likely user error.

Update.

First of all, outstanding customer service from Skout! I emailed them on Friday night and got a call this morning.

The reason the barrel didn't release. When I loosen the ratchet, bringing it all the way to the top of travel went just past the barrel release, two clicks from full open on the ratchet and my barrel released. It sounded like it is done this way be design, ensuring the barrel is always brought back to the same spot.

So it was operator error.

Can't say enough about Skout customer service.

Does it not unlatch, or does it unlatch but not pull out?
Mine does not come out either. I am very worried about the Skout platform. The people at Skout are awesome but I have experienced nothing but problems from my Skout. Air dumps after several attempts at fixing it and a severe lack of power. I have only shot it maybe 4 times because of the problems. I’m going to send it back and request they fix it with no more problems or ask they replace it.

Skout will surely take care of you. The gun is actually pretty simple, once you get to know it. Where is it dumping air from? Has it always lacked power, or did it start doing that recently. Which caliber is your gun?

The o-rings can be an extreme headache on the Epochs.
But the joy of shooting this rifle kinda balances things out.
I had a leak in my Epoch that i just couldn't find. I was losing 1k psi.
i tried soapy water on all the gauges..nothing.
i accidentally spilt some soapy water near the bleeder valve when i finally saw bubbles inbetween the upper and lower frame just above the bleeder valve.
As it turns out, i needed to replace the outer o-rings on the HP regulator. Headache solved

I have had the barrel stick when trying to remove it. I gave the barrel a gentle left twist while holding down the latch and lifting the ratchet.
Really need to pull out straight.

The only part of the rifle i have not messed with is the valve assembly...hopefully i won't have to for a while. But i am a lot more confident with the breakdown/assembly of this rifle beacuse of the worries i have had.

I have no doubt that Skout will help/take care of you. They are a stand up company.

That said. Finding the spot where the ratchet lines the thimble up perfectly in the breech has been the toughest thing for me to find. Sometimes I just loosen the ratchet, bring it back 2 clicks and out it comes. Other times I have to search around a bit to find the correct alignment.

What do you mean by air dumps and lack of power? Being your having trouble getting the barrel out, is it possible the barrel isn’t seating fully in the breech? That may explain the lack of power. Just a stab in the dark.

What did you do to “fix” the problem? Where does air dump from?

My Scout Epoch .22 arrives Tuesday , I waited twelve months before I ordered the gun thinking If there were any problems they would have ironed them out by now....Hmmmm obviously not .
What is obvious? That someone had an unknown problem? Mine has been solid for 11,000+ shots.

2 Skouts. So far I have had no issues with barrel changes. I have barrels in .177, .22, .25, and .30. I have exchanged them many times. I have also noticed that I can remove a barrel for cleaning or maintenance and reinstall it with little or no POI change, which is welcome. I love the ability to remove/replace the barrel without tools or removal of the scope.
I may sound like an advertisement for Skout, I am just an advocate for what I have seen so far.
