HW/Weihrauch HW35E spring ?

The factory spring is completely whupped. It's collapsed. You can't use it as a guide. Just install the JM spring you'll be fine. It'll be a bitch to get together with that much preload.

Setting the spring will take some of the preload away maybe an inch at best. It's still gonna be a bitch to get together.

You may need a spring compressor to get that new spring into your 35.
The old spring is really collapsed, is this the first time you've replaced it?
Why are you showing your 97 spring in the comparison? Your comparing apples to oranges. Creates confusion. Are you sure you ordered the correct spring? Is it possible you ordered the 97 spring?

All has to do with wire size and spacing, Number of coils, nothing to do with appearance ! If you can't getbit comoressed for install, then send it to someone that can. Jim has been making springs for many years, I would trust his judgement. In the rare event that a mistake was made, I am quite sure he will correct it.

The 97 has a 26mm piston. The 35 has a 30mm piston. The 35 has a larger diameter spring because the piston is a larger diameter.

I did the same swap,I always use a spring compressor.I never have compared the new and old springs.
I have used Jim's springs for over 10 years and trust him.There certainly is a difference, just realize that the makeup of the springs are totally different.
I would First do the preload as others have suggested,then go from there.

IF you buy a spring from ARH they need to be set and he charges extra for that but only does it if you ask. If you buy a spring with guides, the spring is set, or at least the ones I've bought have been. If you can get it into the tube with a spring compressor you will effectively set it with the first few firings. Some people manage to mangle the spring trying to set it using long threaded rods and inadequate support.

Look at Paul Watts video and you'll see why you should have had Jim set your spring. Paul uses JM springs.

Free length and coil OD are arbitrary. The diameter and length of the JM spring could only be considered wrong if didn't fit over the factory guide or coil bound before latching. The JM spring might actually give you a nicer shot cycle if it fits the guide better.

Ok now we're getting somewhere. HW uses the larger OD 0.150" wire springs in their HW80 (and R1s) which are 30mm piston guns like the HW35. That's a very stiff stout spring. The HW35 has shorter stroke than the HW80 so the spring would naturally have to be shorter. Since it's such a stout spring and the HW35 has a less efficient articulating cocking arm it has to be shorter still.
The JM spring uses a lighter wire that usually comes in smaller ODs and is typically not as strong. Since it's not as stout, you need the spring to be longer to provide similar preload and spring rate. This spring diameter and guage is very typical in mid power of guns like the 35.
The results of the JM spring may even be better than the factory. Most of his kits I've installed run alot of preload and perform well. The additional length preloads the softer spring more. Also the small ID of the JM spring might fit the guide better and reduce twang. I'm not sure if you're making a top hat for it but the smaller diameter spring could benefit from a top hat and or plastic piston liner to control vibration at the top end. With all that preload it might be fine without it.

I said earlier you'd be lucky to get an inch by setting the spring. It's only "too dang long" if it coil binds to where the piston doesn't latch. Or the power is too harsh. As to the power difference between the new and old spring, I've got questions about that. Call me later if you want.

Yeah, ARH seems to have modified the dimensions of the 1976 OEM spring.
I would also replace that old split spring guide with a tight fitting one; even the smaller diameter spring fits sloppy

Keep in mind, all things being =, smaller OD springs create more power.
That's why Jim is able to get away with a smaller diameter wire (plus he added 2 extra coils.
Just look at Vortek springs ........... smaller OD springs with small wire gauge and large spring pitch between wires.
I never had a problem with an ARH spring, but again my compressor is pretty strong/adjustable.
Further, his website says his spring is capable of making 17 FPE, but the platform restricts it to about 12/13 FPE.
I have (3) HW35E's w/ARH springs - IIRC, I cut or heat-compressed a few coils on two of them to reduce recoil and improve the shot cycle.
My untouched ARH spring (HW35E) shoots at just over 12 FPE and has a more snappy shot cycle.
I've got (3) unused (modern) OEM HW35E springs if you want them ................... just pay for shipping.

If I were U, I'd simply heat 2 coils cherry red and compress.
I use the pellet box foam scrap to cushion the metal work on the wood and use a chair leg pad to cushion the muzzle on my front block.
