JTS 3 months with Airacuda Max.22

Hello everyone, I'm new here and just thought I would share my experience so far with the arakuda max in 22. Been shooting air rifles and have owned several since I was a kid and this is my first PCP.

I ordered the gun from Pyramid Air with the JTS air compressor combo. The first gun I received had serious accuracy issues and I also noticed the regulator was set at 2,200 PSI from the factory, that confused me cuz the manual states that the gun is regulated in 22 at 1800 PSI from the factory, after running across the chronograph and doing my best to adjust the hammer spring I gave up on it ever been acceptably accurate at 25 yards and I just simply returned it and Pyramid Air sent me a replacement, the second gun I received had a crack in the stock right out of the box, again I contacted Pyramid Air they put me in touch with JTS and my first experience in dealing with their customer service was really good, they immediately sent me out a replacement stock. Which I refinished looks much better now!

initially I was pleased with the performance and accuracy of the 2nd gun I recieved, although I did have the issue with the magazines fitting extremely tight marred up the black finish in the breach and on the magazines pretty good until I got that sorted out but then rather quickly I also started to notice that although the regulator was set at 1800 PSI, when I would fill it up to 3200 the regulator would quickly creep up to 2000 PSI. First 10 shots or so would be a bit erratic until it dropped down below 3000 on the main tank and the regulator would drop and hold at 1800. I would get about 15 really accurate shots. Something didn't seem right so again I'm experimenting with hammer spring adjustment but the regulator issue wasn't allowing me to get the consistency I wanted for at least 25 or 30 shots.

I assumed either the regulator was faulty or the seals were leaking a bit. Again I contacted Pyramid Air they told me they could send me a replacement rifle, I was pretty frustrated at this point and convinced another gun would probably just have another problem and I know I should have just returned everything and got my money back. I knew if I tore into the gun and messed around with a regulator I would void the warranty. Being impatient, frustrated and stubborn I made the decision to order a HUMA regulator and swap out the factory one knowing I was going to avoid the warranty on the gun but I was determined to fix it myself... yeah I know I'm an idiot, lol.

I contacted JTS a couple times wanting to get some extra O rings before I tackled this project, I couldn't find anything on their website for OEM parts so I emailed the customer service rep who helped me out with the cracked stock requesting to purchase some extra O-rings and a couple extra piston seals for the compressor...Oh yeah, the Piston seal on the compressor was completely shot after little use, but very easy to replace and they did send an extra one in the kit that I installed but I wanted to have a couple laying around in case this happened again. At this point I could get no response from them, I called Pyramid Air and they gave me a phone number to contact a guy named Travis and I texted him and he responded. I'm not going to go into too much detail about that experience except I will just say that I came to the conclusion rather quickly from that experience that I was on my own now. I went through the schematic of the gun in the manual found the O-ring sizes that I needed went to the O-ring store and ordered what I needed and I'm sure saved a few bucks.

Installation of the aftermarket Huma regulator was very simple although I did have to install a spacer to get the aftermarket regulator to line up like the factory one so the O-rings would be in in their proper position as it sits in the housing.

Got everything back together and I am simply amazed how well this gun performs now. The Huma reg sits firmly at 1800 psi, no creep. And where I was getting if I was lucky 20 accurate shots with the factory regulator being all squirrely I'm now getting 40 to 45 shots @ 870/875 FPS before the Gun starts to drop off the regulator and I have to top it off again. At 25 yards it's damn near hole in hole shots 99% of the time. I'm easily shooting dime-sized groups at 50 yards with jsb18.13.

All that said, I understand it's a entry-level budget PCP and the factory regulators and overall quality control is going to be hit and miss unfortunately, but I managed to get it shooting performing and exceeding my expectations after replacing the regulator, polishing the barrel, smoothing and adjusting the trigger and I learned a heck of a lot.

In my opinion I would stay clear of the compressor... didn't know much about them but after having to already replace the Piston seal on this one and looking at similar ones on Amazon and eBay it kind of looks like they're all the same just package a little different with little gimmick here and there to say one is better than the other, I'm pretty sure the ones that sell for under $300 on Amazon are almost identical and probably made in the same Factory as the $600 JTS branded one... I'm not saying that's the case for sure I have no idea but if I was a betting man😁

Keep in mind if you pull the trigger on this gun that from my experience and in my opinion it's going to be a little bit of a roll of the dice when it comes to the quality, I probably will not be purchasing any more JTS products anytime soon and I sincerely hope the quality control gets a little better and they have continued success in the future. I'm sure people have gotten them right out of the box with zero issues and have been happy I just was a bit unlucky in that regard, and admittedly my expectations were probably a bit too high for a PCP in this price point. All that said it's a damn good looking gun very fun to shoot, and easy to work on if you have to tackle any issues yourself.

Oh and I did slap on a suppressor and it doesn't clip at all gun is extremely quiet aside from that horrible spring twang😅 thanks for reading the book I just wrote Guys, I look forward to sharing and learning here.

I have no doubt that the first batch of Max rifles having the issue with the magazines being pinched in the breach when you tightened up the stock to the receiver really turned people off from buying the gun, and then you had moderators clipping on some of them as well. Those issues could have been avoided with better quality control but you can tell where they were cutting costs to maintain a price point. The Gunstock defect really baffles me... I don't understand how that was not caught and addressed in testing before the gun was made available to the public.

And their initial fix for this was a 3D printed block you had to install and a piece of foam🙄

I mean I understand they had to do something for all these people that were having issues with a gun that was still under warranty. But in my opinion everyone who received that quick fix should have also been sent a new properly fitting stock that doesn't have that issue when they started making them correctly.

I'm not sure about the clipping issue when a moderator is attached but when I look at the schematic in the manual the air stripper shown is a bit different than the one I got on my rifle, luckily I think I got a copy that had that issue address that's why I'm not having any clipping issues.

I have the Standard model and have shot thousands of rounds with zero issues. For the cost if it ever needs anything major, I'll chuck it in the trash. Very accurate and well balanced shooter.......I have also read that getting any support is void! It seems support on all makes is lackluster!
Don't Chuck it in the trash brother! send it to me🤣

Welcome to the Forum! As a fellow "Airacuda owner, "standard" I am very happy with mine thus far. I am over 2500 shots through mine with no problems. Now you will be able to read about the stories we see where even the $1000.00 + rifles have similar problems with their Factory Regs as well. I went the easy route for now with no Regulators. That will most likely change, but for now I am happy. Glad you got yours sorted out. It is depressing however that JTS seems to be poor on the Service end. What happened to the 3 Year Warranty? Anyway Welcome!

Yeah, I get it I've got $200 Gamo rifles and $1,000 Air Arms. At some point I've had issues with all of them... that's just the way it is, especially air rifles. I've had issues with all of them at some point because I shoot the hell out of them and if I can't resolve it myself then 99% of the time the manufacturers get back with me and do their best to help me out.

The Max it seems to me it's a nice gun to get started with as long as you don't have any issues like I did right out of the gate, easy to service, and has a ton of potential above its price point if someone wants to go in and upgrade some things and tweak it.

I just hope the initial quality control that I saw and the sudden lack of customer service when I reached out simply asking how to purchase items from them to fix the gun myself is not something they commonly do. When I was given a phone number by Pyramid Air to contact JTS for parts and questions, I texted them and I was told by who I obviously assumed was a representative of JTS "Call JTS for help" I was like well who in the heck am I talking to?:ROFLMAO: weird.

Just came off like I was bugging them and they didn't have or want to take the time to help me out... which was weird because when I first got the gun and had a crack in the stock they got a new one right out to me, and I was like wow customer service with these guys is going to be great. Actually they did me a favor by not wanting to sell me O-rings or at least direct me to where I could get some from them I spent $12 at the O-ring store and I have enough O-rings to reseal the gun 10 times if need be.

I am a bit mad at myself about the compressor though I really wish I had done more research... I think I could have bought two or three of damn near the same thing off of Amazon and paid for the Amazon 3-year warranty for 30 extra bucks... oh well, live and learn.

Makes a lot of sense. I have not heard of many stories about the Rifle failing much, but Reviewers need to share these types of occurrences with "We the Consumers". But that rarely happens because that is biting the Hand that is feeding them. As for the Compressor, I did like you said. I bought the Compressor with the Warranty from Amazon. Less than $160 total I believe. But I baby it! LOL I charge when I get below 2000psi, and then in about 4-4 1/2 Mins, it's ready to go again. When I shut it off I leave the fan running until it is about the same as when I started. Usually, 3-4 times a day. But after shooting about 50 shots, I am ready for a little break anyway!

it also likes the h&n 18.59 grain Hunter extremes.

And for really good accuracy out the 20/25 yards I would have no problem hunting with the Crossman hollow points as well ... seems to like them.

With this new regulator I'm going to have to go back retest some pellets. It doesn't seem to be all that picky but I can tell mine does not like the jts pellets for some reason.

I have shot a lot of the CHP's and found that slowing them down a little helps make them a little more Accurate. But I may have had "ONE" target with a full mag that I didn't get a Flyer. lol But fun and cheap to shoot. Mine Likes the JTS 18.1 and the Barracuda 21 grn as well. I have some 23 gr Slugs coming. It will be interesting to see what Happens.
Strange that yours doesn't like the JTS?

I have a couple tins left of the jts pellets I have yet to test them since I swapped out the regulator maybe that will make a difference. I may be wrong but it seems like they have a harder alloy makeup than the jsbs that might have something to do with it I don't know

Member Worriedman has quite the Airmax saga, if I’m not mistaken. He will likely chime in at some point…

Yeah, Scotty, been following thread, my story is well documented in the archives, searching, "Airacuda Max," using, "WorriedMan," in the member search box should get you there. Personal opinion is that JTS had a chance to make or break their reputation, they chose poorly. WM

Type "Airacuda Max," in "Search" box (upper right page corner), enter, "WorriedMan" in "member" search box, second box below main search box, hit search. Many responses, first was in, "Airacuda Updates" thread, could search that, too, don't need to enter my name. WM

Took the max out today and put about 100 shots through it, specifically wanting to test out the jts 18.13 grain again, they shot just okay at 25 yards, I wouldn't have any problem taking out birds or maybe even squirrels within that range but anything past that I'm sticking with the jsbs, be honest the Crosman hollow points were just as good if not a bit more accurate if you sort through them a little bit and pick out dented skirts.
