Umarex UMAREX NOTOS - More power without a bottle?

Im considering the inexpensive, agile, and light weight Umarex Notos.
But Id like it modified and ported for more power, while maintaining the oem tube style reservoir.
I will probably send it to Firewalker for his expertise.

Am I expecting too much, out of a modified Notos with a oem, tube-style reservoir?

1. More Power: 825 FPS (or greater) with a 18 grain JSB pellet would be ideal IF possible.
2. No Bottle: I would like to keep the TUBE style reservoir. A larger, longer, aftermarket tube-style reservoir is fine, if needed.
3. Im NOT concerned about shot count... 12 shots would be plenty for my intentions.
4. Id like to eliminate the fill adapter, and replace it with a Foster fitting.
5. Id like to relocate the reservoir gauge on the buisness end, to a reservoir gauge on the side of the tube reservoir.
6. Id like to incorporate a regulator gauge.
7. For economical reasons only, Id prefer to maintain the OEM barrel and moderator, as both seem to be effective.

Am I asking for too much, out of a modified Notos with the oem tube-style reservoir?

Since you asked...my $.02 worth (which "ain't much).

I've had my Notos for about 3-weeks. I was intrigued by videos that showed how accurate the little rifle was. It has not disappointed in that aspect. The price was just unbelievable!! Compared to my FX... it's a bargain.

The magazines are lousy, soooo I ordered Maple mags from Wes. Excellent mag. I reworked the trigger myself to an acceptable 2 1/2#. Not a match trigger...but okay for plinking and hunting.

"If" you are going to spend the money you are talking about, as a suggestion I'd consider a Air Venturi Avenger .22 or .25 for about $350 bucks. Other than the size, it's ready to go. Mine shoots as well as the Notos with goobs of more power!! It puts out almost 50fpe at 920fps with the JSB 25.4 gr pellets.

Best of luck on your decision.

Great suggestion, and thank you.
I have several long and powerful rifles already.
Im interested in a short, lightweight carbine, to keep by the back door for sudden, nocturnal pest's.
The Notos certainly all the box's.
But thanks again for the Avenger suggestion!

I’m running an extra plenum on mine and have everything ported with the reg turned up. At 2600psi it will do ~40fpe with factory barrel. At 2500psi it will do ~50fpe with a 20” barrel (maybe more but I didn’t really crank on it).

I still run the stock tank and it’s only good for 1 magazine (factory mag) before coming off the reg.

In my opinion… which is worth infinitely less than yours, you have set an overly ambitious goal for your Notos.
To get another 100 fps out of the Notos I think you are pretty much DEFINITELY looking at a getting a longer barrel. You might gain a little by opening ports but you are also going to be looking at a higher reg pressure and with that comes a heavier hammer spring. The Notos doesn’t have a great bit of leverage on the bolt lever. In fact if you get it too heavy it feels pretty crappy to try to lever it back. Just my .02 cents.
I’d also love to have one that’s more powerful yet remaining compact. I’m hoping Umarex will build a .25 Notos in the future with a fatter reservoir and redesigned lever that has better leverage. And good magazines.
You may be better served with a different airgun to meet those fpe numbers you want.
A TalonP is an excellent compact and accurate powerhouse.

You may very well be correct.
Getting 825 FPS with a 18 grain pellet , or 27FPE , may be asking for too much out of a Notos.
A lot of previous threads here on AGN, but most seem to focus on increasing shot count via a bottle, as opposed to increasing energy via porting.

Dave,
Details on your porting, plenum, and other modifications, would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks.

I discuss my modifications starting at post #34 in this thread

Fwiw, I didn’t have to change hammer spring for the higher reg pressure. I changed to a flat valve seat with a peek poppet.

Dave

Opened transfer path to .213”
Opened barrel transfer to equivalent
Moved probe shoulder back and thinned
Made a flat seat valve w/peek poppet
Poppet stem .078”
Factory valve spring
Opened up the tank mount path

Transfer path required tapping bottom drill plug for 1/4-28 and making a new screw, the same oring was used here.

I set the factory reg at 2600’ish checked via the bleed port.

2 coils clipped from stock spring
Bored hammer then added back plastic spacers to make adjustments and lighten hammer. This thing barely has any hst adjustment travel.

Stock tank with no added plenum

14.3gr @ 960 (cphp)
25.4 @ 784 (Jts)

Comes off reg after shot 5
30 FPE / 34 FPE!
Useing the stock OEM tube reservoir!
Amazing!
Id like these 30-34 FPE numbers, but would also like to eliminate the fill probe to a Foster style, and incorporate a regulator gauge, while still maintaining the OEM reservoir if at all possible.
I realize that the low shot count (5) might not suit everyone, but this is almost perfect for my own personal needs.
Your numbers are very impressive.
Well done!

Looks like I've got a new poppet in my future.
Please consider making a few extras!
I know of at least 1 person, (ME), that would like to have a Notos gunsmith, transform a Notos!

Your already busy Notos schedule, may get even busier, if you are interested, and can make this happen!
Interested?

my notos must be magic then, i can get 799-816fps with 18gr pellets and 27.68fpe with those dead center 25gr pellets. replaced the chamber o-ring with a slightly beefier one after i opened ports, added plenum, hammer spring lightening and removing metal from behind the hst screw be able to actually lower the power. chuck up that hammer, round up the string corners and polish all metal to metal contact points to a mirror shine and make sure there’s no damaged o-rings anywhere. stock tube nets me about 15-17 shots with the 25gr at 27+fpe and around 30 shots with 14.3gr at around 700fps.. i mainly shoot 23gr nsa slugs, 22gr jts pellets or 14.3 cphp for that extra zip.

Nice!
Your numbers are very impressive.
Which plenum did you select?
Did you modify your oem poppet valve?
Between the 14.3 grain, 18 grain, 22 grain, and the 25 grain pellets, would you say that any one was superior as far as accuracy?

i have the gen1 plenum from c88machining. poppet valve is not modified.
i shoot golf balls with 22.03 gr jts dead center or 23 gr nsa at around 750 muzzle fps at ranges up to 60yards.. that’s for me though. i dont think i shoot as well as a lot of you folks here. i do see the slugs having a flatter trajectory past 40 yards. hades/atomics are really good under 40 yards for me. slight hawaiian breeze conditions with first zero(pellet climb) at 12-15 yards and second zero(pellet drop) at 40-45 yards(depending on what ammo i’m using). i have a laser mounted really low and have that zeroed to hit exactly at 22 yards. i use that laser for quick shots and to correct my parallax without taking eyes off target. 😎

Golf balls at 60 yards, with a slight Hawaiian breeze!
Sounds like life is great!
Enjoy!

its not a 100% hit rate at 60 yards but i do make contact when i’m a good shooting groove using 22gr jts or 23gr nsa. 30’ish yards is about 80% hit ratio with cphp and i know i can hit them every time at 20 yards with cphp. golf balls are tiny and im not a very consistent shooter as far as disciplinegoes
I dont think we will see the Notos winning too many 100 yard events....
However, for a short, compact, $240 carbine, its plenty accurate and 100% fun!
