What scope for hft?

While the ideal scope ever found for hunter class Ft is No longer made ( Optisan / MTC 4-16x50 VIPER )

Have been using on my other HFT gun a HAWKE Airmax 6-24x50 at 16x doing pretty well with it this season. * 3rd place finish at the Nevada State FT championship and a Second place finish at the Oregon state FT championship.

Like nearly ALL scopes when at 16X the parrilax when used to range find gets sketchy beyond 40 yards .. some better than others, tho all challenged.

Greetings, Scott,
I'm interested in trying FT/HFT and have been researching scopes to that end when I came across this old post. What caught my eye was your mention of the Nevada State FT Championship as I'm located in Sparks, NV.I'm going to try and get up to Ashland, OR, next weekend and "see what all the fuss is about". :)
I wonder if you or others here might be able to enlighten me regarding airgun groups/clubs and competitions in the area of Western Nevada?

The ONLY Field target club operating in Nevada ( NAG ) is a once a year event out in Horse Canyon south of Battle Mountain.
Those who run and put on this event actually are California residents. One of them owning the land where event is held each year.
There is no active FT events happening in NV outside of this yearly State / GP event best I know.

Thank you for the reply, Scott,

My wife and I shot at a match recently to see if it is something we would enjoy doing together and had a good time. We shared my gun for the match and will be purchasing one for her in the future. After learning more about field target in general. The scope that came with my gun ( centerpoint 6x40 ao) is lacking to say the least. It seems to change little to none no matter what setting it is on. I am by no means an experienced shooter having only started shooting a couple of month's ago, and before that I had a break barrel about 20 years ago without a scope. I would like to upgrade my scope but I'm not sure witch way to go. I am looking at a hawke air max 2-7x32 ao amx. To my way of thinking only shooting out to 55 yds. how much magnification do I really need?
Thought I’d revisit this thread. Having invested in lots of glass there is a sleeper out there - the Element Titan 3-18x50 in a 34 mm tube. What’s unique is 10-55 yards on a 6” round wheel is at 300 degrees!!
I’m currently comparing this Titan to Athlons Heras SPR 6-24x56…

I’m not an FX guy but on paper the Element Titan 3-18 looked like a good HFT scope. BUT according to their website they
show a 15 yd/mtr minimum focus. Damn! Please say it ain’t so! Uj
I believe the SFP and FFP are the difference??? Not sure?? Mine = both of them = focus to 10 yards... almost 9.5 yards.

Hey Cavedweller
Which reticle do you have on your Element Titan? I’m new to this FT game and was wondering which way to go.
The christmas tree style is very useful in windy conditions. APR-2D 3-18×50 FFP MRAD
more info at https://element-optics.com/product/titan-3-18x50-ffp

Then add a 6" round magnetic parallax wheel from Eric Sanders at Scope Werks or JD Garland.

  • 4mm Main Body Tube
  • Illuminated, First Focal Plane Reticle
  • Aircraft Grade Aluminium
  • Side Parallax: 10yds-Infinity
  • HD Glass for reduced chromatic aberration and improved sharpness
  • Tool-Free Resettable Turrets with 10 MRAD / 25 MOA per Revolution
  • Upgraded Stainless Steel Turret Mechanism
  • Hard Mechanical Zero-Stop
  • Removable Magnification Throw Lever
  • Waterproof, Fogproof, Shockproof & Nitrogen Purged
  • Sunshade, Lens Cloth & Rubber Lens Covers included
  • 150 MOA (43.6 MRAD) Elevation Travel
wrap your wheel with white tapebut don't stretch the tape. After calibrating the wheel to your eyes, and numbering the wheel from 9 yards to 60 yards cover your numbers with clear tape so they don't smudge. Thats what i do... pics above are incomplete process.

100,000 dollar question ... HOW BADLY DOES it TEMP shift from say 70*f to 110*f ?

If there is a down side to having such fantastic degrees of parrilax rotation 10-55 yards, is that if temp shift exists it could really bite you
Well can’t say yet, but I generally don’t let my scopes suck up the direct sun as I keep a bright white cloth over them. Having no experience with any other scope spreading out the numbers this well your thoughts on temp shift means I’ll have to test somehow?
