HW/Weihrauch Is having a barrel chopped, choked and recrowned still a “thing” these days?

I had a .22 cal HW barrel done “back in the day” (late 2000’s) and it seemed like it was much more openly discussed then.

Are any of you doing this or having it done to your guns these days?

Im considering purchasing an extra barrel and having it done to a HW30S. Why? Just because I like shorter rifles in general.

Who is the right AG smith to send a barrel to for a nice chop, choke and recrown spa day?

Back in the early 90’s I visit the Theoben factory and was shown the process they used for choking every barrel the used. It was a hydraulic machine designed to crimp hose ends. They made a smooth collet to fit. The guy “crimped “ the barrel and pushed a pellet through, repeated the process until it “felt” right.

Seemed a pa blog or another blog claimed when hw does the front sight dovetail it chokes the muzzle end of the barrels . So I'm assuming that dovetail is pressed in not cut ..?

I just called and asked about the barrels (AoA) and purchased one in .177 and one in .22 so those will be on their way soon. I also called Pomona to see if and what they charge for the work. I left a VM there since they weren’t open yet. It’s scary but I may just chop and recrown one myself and see how well it shoots. If it’s horrible I could send it to Pomona then…

You called it right, at least for me. It’s not that it’s shooting poorly it’s for something unique and to my liking as far as looks and function. I just like having some things specific to my preferences…

Ed Canoles did one his self, he used a giant hex nut and bored it out .001 or .002 under the barrel diameter I think, don't quote me on that. Then split, cut the hex nut in two. Then he sandwiched the barrel in between the halves and squeezed them together in a big vise. It worked from what I saw. I'm sure you can find the post at GTA.

maybe they look at some of the top rifles and notice they have 9 inch barrels inside a 19 inch shroud ? so hey think they do not need all that extra ? or they are thinking lock up time / the pellet is out of the barrel b4 they have a chance to wobble ? I Still think it would make even an HW30 much harder to cock .

I've done it to remove a choke that was too tight and add my own, or to shorten an unnecessarily long barrel.

Both of those were very valid reasons for me.

I do my own work, so the return of investment isn't a factor in my case.

Yes! I think I’ve read that one looong ago now that you mentioned it. I talked to Steve at Pomona this AM. I discussed my plans with him. He said that he would chop an inch off whatever I did to be able to do what he needs to. I may just chop one myself, recrown it and see how it shoots and go from there.

Well, the R9 pictured above has the chopped barrel on it. It’s only slightly increased cocking pressure compared to the “long” barreled version. The 30s are so easy to cock already that the pressure needed is not really an issue for me. It may be a real issue for some to consider so there is that…
