If you have a set of calipers, you can measure the springs dimensions (wire diameter, spring od, spring length) and count the active coils, then input that data into a website that calculates spring ratings (commony lb/in). From that you can deduce a slightly weaker spring of equal length.

I normally keep the original parts and do modification with different parts. If the modification does not work as intended or I just want to reverse the modification, I can always go back the the factory parts and try again.

That's a good way to do it.
