Pyramid Refurbished Air Tank.

Then what? Tinker with it? And then be told that I voided the warranty it came with? Thanks, but no thanks.

We're stating what we would do, not what you should do...difference.

Notice he said "I'd", not "You should...".

If you're not comfortable, there is nothing wrong with returning the unit and requesting a refund or replacement.

Tested to 7500psi...

Hydro testing is destructive on carbon fiber bottles. The fibers are not made for hydro testing, they are static, not dynamic like steel or aluminum.

Go buy a "new" one

This is very false, because its a carbon fiber wrapped tank with aluminum shell, and they 100% are required to be tested every 5 years.

I think that the 2007 white paper you posted is woefully out of date and even though you got the 5 year retest date right, you are wrong that it has to be hydro tested. Hydro testing is destructive to CF bottles, they have a 15 year life due to the TESTING performed. Ultrasonic testing is a safe alternative and is non-destructive on CF bottles.

It is also incorrect that you have to have your bottles tested every 5 years as a matter of law or enforcement, the DOT code does not apply to those not in commerce.

The USN challenged the DOT for extensions and the industry for a change in testing methods and in 2012, the final rule was released.

Specifically the wording in blue; all pressure vessels with high pressure gasses must be inspected and tested every 5 years, steel, aluminum and CF are all included.

Private ownership and non-DOT transportation are exempt.

You can literally see the sticker from hydro testing on it here..

So, you didn't read the attachments then?

Denying truth is not the same as truth being false. Hydro testing was designed a hundred years ago for steel pressure vessels.

Along came aluminum pressure vessels and they also were hydro tested.

Both are dynamic materials, both expand then contract if safe pressures are maintained. The ONLY inspection other than visual is failure under test pressure when using hydrostatic testing.

Still following me?

Along came carbon fiber, not understanding the static and non dynamic nature of carbon fibers, they used hydrostatic testing on CF vessels but failures would become apparent over time and the 15 year lifespan was established.

The United States Navy wanted to extend the service life of thier CF tanks so in conducting studies (posted) it was determined that it was hydrostatic testing that was damaging the fibers thus shortening the life's of the CF tanks.

Investigations were conducted, hydrostatic testing was found to be the primary cause of hydrostatic testing failure so they looked for alternatives to hydrostatic testing.

Ultrasonic testing was tested and found to be superior in every way, new bottles with 30 year labels were created, they are not allowed to be hydrostatic tested, only Ultrasonic testing can be used on them.

These bottles are now available on the open market for firefighting and the United States Navy now uses them on all thier vessels as the 15 year bottles time out.
