Ibs 50 yards targets

I shoot these targets at 50,75 and 100 yards. Sometimes at 75 I hit all the centers. Pending conditions. At 100 yards I keep all 25 out of the green. Is this match grade shooting? This one I done last week at 75 yards. Not every day I take the time to try, this was with a panthera 22 caliber. Jsb 28.55 grain pellets. My gun likes them at 1004fps. At 50 yards I hit every center most time, but get some fliers. This ammo came right out the tin as does all mine. I shoot to much to sort.

I'm not sure of the diameter inside the green circle, but if you are holding around 1MOA (1" group at 100 yards) you are shooting at a match grade level. Sure, you can d!ck with your standard deviation until you are blue in the face, and it still comes down to how you can read the wind, etc. The gun is good, but the shooter is still the king of the shot.

As evidenced by my entry into the COVID Shots challenge yesterday, I have a tendency to "blow through" my shots pretty fast. This is good when you have consistent wind, but my winds were all over the place for that challenge as we had some weather coming in. I got in about 20 minutes before it started raining hard.

This ammo came right out the tin as does all mine. I shoot to much to sort.
To determine if it was the pellets or the gun, you can first start with a chronograph, but you really won't know unless you sort some to find out. If you are getting, say, three fliers per 40 shots, just sort 40 pellets. Keep the chronograph on there, but only shoot those pellets. If you are still seeing the same ratio of fliers, it's the gun. If the fliers go away, it's the pellets. You only have to sort 40 pellets to find out. If it is the gun, that is great as on an FX as it probably means that you just need to fine tune the valve to dial it in.

Anyway, I hope that this helps. Shoot straight...

From center dot to green is 1inch and a eighth, centers are half inch, one line before the green is the same as 9 ring on fx target. These are 22lr ibs 50 yard targets.

So, hitting centers at 75 yards is sub-MOA, which is definitely competitive. I'd suspect that it is the pellet head size causing your outliars. We've proven that bent skirts don't really matter.
The shot at the top was me tuning my gun, those where no fliers. I gun was set to shoot slugs,I got a can of the 28.55 grain jsb and wanted to try them. All shots at top of target was me zeroing my gun and reaching a tune. The same tune at 100 yards is a nite mare. Lol I tried it and had to return for each distance with each pellet.

The same tune at 100 yards is a nite mare.
Well, your velocity of 1004FPS is pretty fast for a pellet. They may be spiraling is the reason why it is worse at farther distances. It is also possible that having a barrel for slugs means that your twist rate is too high for the pellets. Part of the art and science of this hobby is that not all projectiles or barrels are created equal.

I hope this helps!!

I tune my rifles for each distance I shoot.,for each type of pellet. Doesn't take a whole mag for me to find the setting for that distance. Once I do,I zero, and shoot. My 100 yard target are much much different from the 75 yard target I posted, maybe not as many centers, but for sure outside the green. That's about the best I've been able to do. I was curious before I spent 1000$ going to a match was I gonna be competitive. I'd not like showing up and everybody knocking all the center out while I can't do it. At 75 yards ,conditions pending I can hit every center. At nite I do it often and at 50 yards it's a breeze. But at 100 with pellets ,a miss read of the wind will put you in the other target. Total they are 5 or 6inches big,. Pellets drift 6 in at hundreds yards if wind is blowing.

The more you prepare, the more competitive you will be. I took my 13YO son to RMAC two years ago, and the experience you get is invaluable...especially the first year as you understand the process better. Don't expect to sit on the podium on your first try, and I would shoot in everything (maybe big bore excluded depending on the guns you have). If you don't compete, you will never know how you stack up. The YouTube shooter "STKO"/"All About Airguns" always talks about how good of a shooter he is, but he has never competed to the best of my knowledge. As Matt Dubber has mentioned, competition will humble you.

You can look for (or organize) a local match to get practice so the out of pocket isn't as much. Just a thought.

Good luck!!

I gonna win the pryimid cup in 2025. Those have been my plans anyway. Nothing really local but steel targets, and it's still not close. I'm in west tn. I shot this at 100 yards. Notice how my hundred yard shooting is much different from 75 yards. I'm missing something and can't figure it. I should be able to hit more centers but they just will not go straight that far. I shoot one of these or more about everyday.

All depends on what type of shooting you are planning on doing.....

Hunting ... sure will do the job
Benchrest .... depends on the day and the other shooters, but you have a good chance of placing high
PRS style .... if under an inch you should be golden at 100 yards

It really comes down to specifics

Your shooting pellets at over 1000 fps....... why? Slow them down to around the 850-950 fps range and see what happens. More than likely the fliers you are seeing is the instability in the ammo. There is no need to push them that fast. And why do you tune for each range? Find what works best at all the ranges and stick with that speed. Sounds like you are doing way more than you need to, and are causing yourself headaches. A pellet that will shoot good at 100 yards typically will shoot good a most other ranges. Don't get sucked into the "tuners paradox" and do to much.

I'm telling you,for different distances, different speeds matter. I've tried slow, works up close, but my targets suffer from it out farther. By next year I'll be able to hit all 25 centers I hope as I got my first pcp rifle a year ago. Good luck to you at the matches and thanks for the advice.

I agree with @woogie_man that you should slow your pellets down. I shoot my H&N Baracudas at about 875FPS and get great results out to 100. If I crank them up to even 915FPS, they will start spiraling when I get out past 50 yards. This sounds really familiar with what you are experiencing @Hunter25.

Slugs will tolerate the higher velocities, but pellets really don't. So far, to the best of my knowledge, slugs are still not allowed on benchrest, so I wouldn't waste my time trying to tune them in yet if I were you.

Another thing I mentioned earlier was that since you have a Panthera, you should check the twist rate of your barrel. Pellets like in the neighborhood of a 1:18, and slugs a lot faster. I believe that they like around 1:10. If your twist rate is too high, it may never shoot pellets very well, so you may have to change your barrel to get the benchrest results you are "shooting for". For FX, I believe that the "smooth twist" is the way to go.

Good luck with that podium at Pyramyd Cup 🤞

Some pellets, even the same weight like different speeds. While this pellet may shoot good at 890fps,another may not. I just so happen to find a good speed for fx pellets, even when it's windy, they cut right Thur it like a slug, hardly much dirft,at a faster speed using a faster twist liner. They don't start their speed curve till after 100 yards. I shot last nite. If I posted the target, some would say it's not true. I'm gonna see if I can get off work this weekend to go watch PAc. They do allow people to watch or do I have to be registered for that also?
