Need advice on a purchase…..sending $ but afraid

I got scammed recently after I posted a WTB ad. The sellper had been on the forum since 2020. Not many post but I read them and they seemed legit. Every question I asked about velocity, pellets, scope, etc. he had a solid answer. So someone that had knowledge of airguns. He wanted PayPal F&F and I fell for it. Got a couple of emails back from him and then nothing. $180 out window gone! I communicated with him through email vs through the forum. That was a big mistake and should have been a red flag. So my advice is be careful and make the seller do it your way. If they won’t then walk away. You are the buyer and you have the money they want. Let them jump through the hoops to get it.

It is well documented that Paypal has discriminatory practices against firearms and gun related products and in some cases have confiscated people's money as a result or have not honored insurance claims for such products. I cancelled my Paypal account and don't use Venmo either as it is an arm of Paypal. There are other safe means of transfering money which I use. If you don't like it, that's too bad because I'm not going to knuckle under to them as a matter of principle.
This is 100% true. So I am not saying the seller is absolutely legit but his reasons aren’t exactly outlandish either. OP did you speak to him on the phone. You can really get a feeling for someone on the phone. Maybe do a video call where he actually shows you the gun live ??

Agree with all that has been said, but here is something else to consider. PayPal now sends a 1099 to the IRS on any funds received by a seller. You have to show the IRS what you paid for the item and if you sold it for more than what you bought it for, that is income. Many sellers have now gotten away from PayPal and moved to other payment venues that do not have to report to the IRS. Venmo and Zelle included. The seller is not going to respond to PayPal payment questions by saying "I want to avoid IRS taxes" in an email that would become public record and could cause their audit by our good friends in Washington. Hi, we are from the Government and are here to help you, LOL.

So i made a post in the classified section WTB a dream air rifle I wanted. It’s a tx200 hc walnut. This person contacts me with the timestamp shows me his drivers license, but doesn’t want me to pay him through PayPal good and services. We agreed on a price. I insisted that I will pay for the fee
Using PayPal goods and services, but he said that an air rifle is considered a firearm and PayPal doesn’t like that. I googled this through PayPal and PayPal does not have an issue Protecting me when buying an air rifle. The seller insist that I use Venmo and that I would be protected so I searched the protection program through Venmo and it states that you are protected if you buy goods from someone with a business account not if you send money for an item , and you send it to an individual.
Am I asking for too much as a buyer to feel safe before I send $ to someone for an item they might or might not send me?
Scam or am I over thinking and Venmo does protect me if I send him the money as an individual?
In my many years of buying and selling, the only thing I use is the paypal invoice system. The seller creates an invoice to send the buyer thru paypal, the buyer uses a secure credit card to pay the invoice. If the item doesn't arrive then file a claim and the CC will stop payment and return your money within 30 days.

Can you file a claim with friends and family or only with goods and services?

I was doing a little digging and found the same exact photos this guy sent me. Only difference was the original poster put these photos up on Reddit 3 years ago and is from PA. Here is the original post https://www.reddit.com/r/airguns/s/C3cpJk3htm now the scary part is here are the photos the scammer sent me and I asked for a time stamp and it looked real.

Not exactly. Only payment for goods and services from BOTH Venmo and PayPal are reported and only that ABOVE $600.00.
