Have been looking at getting my son out more for pigeons and crows. While we have been looking around my son has been on the tube of you and has found that our British brothern typically use decoys for these birds.

That got me to wondering if any of you guys here in the states uses decoys? And if you do, which ones do you use? And how successful have you been when using decoys?

I've got some of these that live on the top rail of the pipe fence down one side of my property. Seems that all the various types of doves, as well as pigeons, seem to think it's safe to land when they see brethren.

Price has gone up since I bought, but your thinking is sound, at least for the Columbidae family.

As for crows, I don't hunt them anymore but growing up I did when in season. The first crow was tough, but after that they'd snowball when using the prior crows as decoys. Could kinda prop them up with sticks on the ground and then blow on a crow call. They'd swarm. Busted em with shotguns. Smart dudes though, would have to move a few miles between sets, almost like a guy does when calling coyotes. Never tried crow decoys without the crow in distress mouth call.

There have been people making starling decoys out of styrofoam for awhile. There was a thread about it over on gta's forum.
One guy was freezing the ones he killed and stood them up out in his yard when he wanted to bring in more targets.
Personally, I haven't used decoys but, I do use my old cellphones and Bluetooth speakers for calling them in. I found that a recording of nestlings is like crack for them. A dead one propped up nearby adds to the excitement. Pretty sure what works for starlings would work for crows, also. I've heard an owl decoy will bring them in, too. They will mob it but, don't know how long they would stick around after the first one dropped.

Woogie , You can increase the odds w/ decoys for sure . I've used crow decoys for years , hollow plastic full size & flat wood headed w/ plastic wings . All work together or separate . As mentioned by others , dead birds propped up work as well ( for any pest birds ).

I have a few buddies that use this brand for ducks and geese, and they swear by them. Very nice and very high quality, but the price may be a bit on the high side...maybe?
