FX M4 with hybrid slugs

I just dropped this tune on my Impact M4. I’m sure I could reduce the reg a bit, but I’d prefer for the reg to be the engine instead of the hammer.

Currently the goal is to smoothly shoot the 22g FX Hybrid slugs between 980-990 FPS.

First I’ll try it with the standard liner, then switch to a heavy liner if the results aren’t good. If neither of those yield the results I’m looking for then I’ll switch back to the standard liner and reduce the velocity to about 930 FPS.

*when i first tuned it to 990 FPS it was quite a bit jumpier, then I realized that I forgot to rotate the barrel 180° from the pellet transfer port to the slug transfer port. This allowed air to flow much easier and increased the velocity by 30 FPS. I left the reg where it was at 125b and reduced the QTS by 10 clicks.

None of my barrels (liners) yielded the results I wanted at 985 FPS. The standard liner was ok, the heavy liner was better, but I’m looking for greatness.

I detuned it a bit down to 930 FPS for the 22g Hybrids, and 880 FPS with the 25g Hades Monsters (I’ve got a feed lot pesting trip coming up 👹). Now it’s shooting ridiculously smooth and quiet.

I should get a chance to test it tomorrow.

Oh, you inspired me to revisit the heavy liner in my 500mm Impact. It’s a little sweatheart in .22 in the 920-930 range. But very sensitive to keeping it on track. I will try the warp speed approach and see what happens. I don’t need this gun on my upcoming hunting trips so I’ll have all winter to try to get it back to where it’s at now if things don’t work out. I got it back to behaving after my last venture when I cut the chokes off heavy and standard liners and tested them. But it took a while to find that almost perfection again.

Keep us informed. It will help get many pointed in the right direction when they come searching. I have one hot rod slugger and two 930ish sluggers. I enjoy shooting the 930’s more. One .22 and one .25. Just friendly little guys.
Yeah, I want to keep this one a quiet smooth shooter. I’ve got several other HP slug slingers. Awesome in their own right, but not as enjoyable on my 55y range.

That's what i found with the NSA 23gr 2175 slug as well, my M4 is a lot quieter and tame at 940~950fps than when i had it at 980~1000fps. I kept the reg at 120 bar to also drive the 25gr AEA pellets. 45~50ft-lb seems to be the sweet spot for my bone stock M4 without pushing it too hard, very snappy and fun to shoot.

I was hoping to find a barrel that liked both the FX Hybrid slugs and the JSB Hades Monsters. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a barrel that liked both.

The Hades Monsters decided they liked the 1:24 liner at 890 FPS

The FX Hybrids flew better at 930 FPS than 980 FPS for me. They liked one of my 1:24 liners better than the other, but clearly liked the 1:18 Heavy liner best. These are all 10 shot groups at 55 yards in rather windy conditions.

Interesting. I'm curious.....since these Hybrid is partially based on pellet design, I'm wondering if they would fly even better at 880~890fps with the standard Superior STX liner (1:24?) that came with the M4? Another thing that you could try with these FX Hybrid is with a shorter burst of slightly higher pressure air, perhaps 120 to 125 bar at the reg, with lower Valve and Micro (HS) to keep the speed back down to 880~890 fps.

Appears it likes the 25gr a lot. I did have some luck with the 27gr H&Ns around 960+. What barrel length are you using?

I understand what you’re saying about increasing the valve return spring to close the valve quicker. But that seems like a lot of reg pressure for a 22g at 880 FPS out of a 700mm barrel.

The tune I’ve got on it sounds very quiet and efficient. I‘m pretty happy with the results I’m getting using the 1:18 liner. But I’m not totally opposed to trying a higher reg pressure, more hammer, and more valve return.

I‘ll do a light polish tonight and shoot a bunch more groups tomorrow while refining the tune.

One of my 1:24 liner did like the Hades Monsters. Though the diameter of the 10 shot group was significantly large than the Hybrids. But I bet they’d be devastating if they made contact!
