This has been fun:

IMG_0933.jpeg

1701P and Prod in AR stocks, each rigged with regs, lightweight hammers and valves modded for extra plenum space. Strikers, poppets and TPs made from PEEK. Tuned to get max power from a .42 spring (prod) or a .36 spring (1701P) for easy cocking. 18fpe from the Prod shooting 16grain JTS and 11.7fpe from the 1701P shooting JSB 10.34s. Custom shrouds make sure these gals don’t spook their targets. The 1701P is barely a blip on the sound meter. Couple minutes and either one can transform to a pistol. Prod gets 24shots and the 1701P gets 18 on the reg:

They’re as accurate as they are pretty!

You love Crosman airguns, and I still have plenty of them too.

Beautiful stocks and regulators.
And a good shot string that can be counted on fingers and toes :)
You also tripled their price, but in love and war all is fair :)

I have a PROD.
Its design is about 15 years old.
In 2024 there are airguns at half their price which shoot much better.
I’ve also owned a few at 5x the price that don’t shoot as well 😁

But, you make a very good point that merits some introspection. No doubt, a younger person would just get a Notos, maybe an Atomic if they’re a bit more flush. When you’re older though, there’s a part of you that wants that first crappy airgun back. The one that could only hit a can of Coke at 20 yards on one of every 5 shots. But you end up settling for one of these. They have a similar feel but they’re ten for ten on your 1in spinner at 50y.

I’m shooting one of my prods right now 🤘I should just quit messing around and go regulated. I’m new to all this and sure having fun. I have a wood stock and haven’t even took it out the box yet. Waiting to get it all set up first. No matter how I tune it over 700fps(14.3cp) it falls on its ass around 2k. 2 mag only gun so far.

I think the Prods kinda get overlooked nowadays. Or maybe some of the older forum info turns guys away. You’ll read old post saying they aren’t real accurate or a 30 yards under only gun. Both mine literally stack pellets at 25 yards. At 50 yards they even shoot good for what they are. Easily hit a golf ball at 50 yards.

Thanks for sharing your P Rods. They are sweet! Also gives me motivation to finish mine haha

Get out and sling some lead,
Rob

Sorrry = 1701.
My 1701 stock is the prod stock, cut shorter. I then added a 3D printed endcap that holds the tube. If you zoom in, you’ll see it

Edit: however, this will not work if your 1701p has a gauge because it’s in a different place. Mine was deleted when I added the reg. The hole will become a 3D printed pellet caddy.

Due to the excessive “moderation” of the 1701, it is actually longer than the prod. But it is whisper quiet. There is barely any action noise due to the fact a PEEK poppet allows use of a very light hammer and spring. Then there’s a PEEK striker, so no metal on metal tink. Combined with the moderation, it is stupidly stealthy. It was a very specific design brief to produce an accurate ratter that is Uber stealthy, actually for my neighbor, who lives next to a very “sensitive” character. Impact noise is the only concern, as can be heard in this video, where the microphone is 3in above the gun, indoors, and it’s hitting a spinner at 40y…

Both of these are stackers at 40y. The prod needed its Crosman barrel crown and port touching up but the 1701 has a stock LW. The mags on the prod can be hard on pellets and the JTS are more resistant. I’ve spent way too long tuning these things to perfection. They even have curved 3D printed PEEK transfer ports (that didn’t make any real difference, LOL). But the ESs are stupidly low (5-8) while on the reg. Accuracy-wise, they are much better than a Notos and at least as good as my Atomic XR or Katran SC. Also, when you have very little hammer going into the shot cycle, you learn how much that was screwing with your accuracy. This is another benefit of the reg. You can go light on the mechanics because you’re never trying to open the valve at 200bar.

I actually like my prods better than my notos. I’m just starting down the rabbit hole lol. Tuning has been fun but at this point I’m just chasing numbers I think. 5-10fps probably won’t make a big difference to a squirrel. I did the b Staley but still not sold on it. I’m getting pretty decent consistency but the real test will be when I’m out in the cold.See if it affects the buffer. I’m after 16-17fpe.
I noticed some pellets seem to load smoother. I even tried tuning a magazine by beveling edges and polishing. It might work a tad better or it’s my imagination lol. I’m going to stick with the Benjamin single dies for now.

I’m assuming when you regulate it makes it way easier to cock?. I don’t like how hard mine gets to cock. Probably extra wear/tear on parts plus more to release sear.Tim said he has good results with just a light hammer(kit he sells) and no weather variation like the bsm. I’ll keep experimenting. Maybe use your tune as a reference if I go that route.

Thanks
Rob

I’ve never carried stocks for the 1701. To me that gun is more suited as a pistol. The gauge on the 1701 is further back towards the grip frame. Plus, the stock needs the barrel band to mount to.
I just posted a batch on the website two days ago and there’s only one left now of the AR1. Didn’t even have time to put out an email blast that I was gonna do this weekend. Should have more in about 2 to 3 weeks.

I just got mine yesterday, chopped it and put on a band. It’s a perfect fit with no gauge. Thanks again, Rich!

That’s right Rob. Easier to cock and it also elevates the performance of the trigger because the sear releases easier.

Thanks. I might have some questions later if you don’t mind. I just shot a couple strings I’m happy with. It’s like 75 degrees out so I’ll try again in the morning when it’s cold. Here’s my last string. Seems decent to me but I don’t know to much either haha. If tune atays there I’ll be happy. Well happy for now, you know how that goes haha.

Have a great rest of weekend,
Rob

Hey Rob,

One more thing you might like:

These 10-shot Maple Customs mags that came today are a 1000% improvement! Smooth running, simple to load and great accuracy. Also the 3-2-1 shot countdown 😁

Thanks. I keep forgetting I have one maple mag. It doesn’t clear my adapter on my other prod so I never used it really. I had my tactical one out tonight. Won this from a Airgun Revisions raffle. Best thing I ever won.

The 1701P got a few 3D printed trinkets that I optimized for fit and function

IMG_0951.jpeg

1. A new loading tray with a grooved slide that allows the pellet to roll down into position:

IMG_0954.jpeg

2. A pellet caddy that holds ~100 pellets and has a little gate that releases one at a time:

3. A band to hold the gun in the stock by the air tube (with a little dovetail rail built in):
