Here's what I noticed this week, and the reasoning behind having a dedicated thread showing what different pellets and slugs do at airgun speeds and weights...
This first picture is a couple NSA .45 350 grain slugs, shortened on the backside to 1" long and 336 grains now. The longer slug was shot into ballistics gel at 750 fps, and the shorter slug shot into dirt/sand bank at 695 fps. Penetration in the gel was around 17"

Neat pic. Though I think it would be more beneficial to show the difference in expansion at different velocities into the same media.

Here's a wild discovery with 45 caliber slugs. There was no real expansion at slower speeds. They essentially turned into strait walled slugs but traveled deep into the gel. Pictured left to right-- 240 grain, 325 grain, and 350 grain.
Muzzle velocity - Foot Pounds Energy
240 grain - 845 fps - 381 pfe
325 grain - 745 fps - 401 pfe
350 grain - 711 fps - 392 pfe
Gel block penetration & impact speed:
240 grain - 838 fps - 10"
325 grain - 737 fps - 22"
350 grain - 708 fps - 25"

The only pellet I’ve ever recovered from game that produced any useful expansion is the Daisy .22 hollow point.

Knockout expansion
I have been kind of lucky I think to keep getting slug recoveries in some of my squirrels. It has been nice to see the different slugs expanding in real world conditions and not trying to replicate in other media. Today's slug recovery comes courtesty of Mr Squirrel, who volunteered to test out...
