HW/Weihrauch HW97k stock finish

Was shopping for a gel stain today and came across this, carbon grey, I thought it looked cool, sorta like a laminate look for a stock. Has anybody here tried this on a HW stock, if so lets see some pics of your result?

This was at home depot, but several makers have this flovor.
Only thing that works on beech is dye and spray finish n

oils wont work. To get solid color ..
you end up with severe light and dark fleck.

I haven't looked at dyes. Was thinking of gel stain and polyurethane top coat in matte. I don't want any gloss finish. What do you top coat the dyes with? Do you have any pics of your stocks done that way?

This Kodiak is a dye jobs and sprayed. You will never get them completely color uniformity but with good prep ,sanding and water popping with pre dye , (iron oxide bleach). Depending on color, most want that chocolate brown , then you add peroxide to the pre dye iron oxide to lighten it.
The analine dye, is easy and drys instantly and no streaks as it’s not staining the wood but coloring the fiber. Trans Tint . Diluted on denatured alcohol and sprayed with a good matte rattle can poly With a fan blowing on low away from you so you get no overspray and flash is instant.

Factory’s use a spray booth with tinted finish and dye prep.

These two were done purposely to show some original color with a washed out driftwood look.

They look good. I want mine a little darker than your bottom pic. Are all these top coated with spray poly acrylic? The Kodiak looks really good with that dark color. I bought a pre stain conditioner and chocolate gel stain today, was gonna get a matte polyurethane to top coat it, but now you got me wondering..lol.

Yeah scrap all that, I'm going to try the transtint per A.G.R. thanks for the info.

Why not? I used Tru-Oil on my TX's stock, which came to me dry as a bone, and I'm very happy with the results. It just needs to be applied correctly.

It looks good. I'm not going for a gloss finish. I've never tried tru oil myself so I know nothing about it. Also everybody's taste in stock finishes are going to be different, so I say, do what makes you happy, that's what I'm gonna do.

Personal taste. 😉. Unless your French polishing it ,it will gloss and look like shellac. It dries way to fast and is difficult to work with extended periods. It’s personal preference. . That being said ,what I use may Not be everyone’s mug of beer either. 🤔

That makes sense. (y) I applied a tiny amount at a time and kept rubbing it in until it was virtually dry. I applied around 10 coats that way, and it really brought out the beauty of the wood without giving it a shellacked look.
