Events Ultimate Field Target match at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club on 11/23/24

Big news for UFT @ PRGC!

This month will be the first of Ben's new format.

He has been working hard and added a third target to each lane, and restructured to allow a broader range of airguns to be competitive.

It seems more complicated than it really is but I'll take a stab at making it clear....

Three targets, near, middle and far.
If you're under 20 foot pounds (think AAFTA) you can shoot the near and middle targets for some good practice.
If you're under 50 foot pounds you can shoot all three, for what Ben's calling "the full Monty," resulting in a 72 shot match. That's lots of shooting!
If you're 50-100 foot pounds, you can shoot the middle and far targets for a "long range/high power match."

No allowance for greater than 50fpe will be allowed for the full Monty. IE zero tolerance policy for fpe greater than 50fpe. This is for protecting the new/nearest targets.

So, rimfire and high powered slugs can still come shoot a 48 shot high power match. AAFTA guys can come practice. Guys with hunting rigs in that sweet spot of .22 and 30-35fpe can come shoot without needing a very expensive scope and all the paraphernalia that comes with AAFTA field target classes. Essentially, if you've got an airgun, come shoot a match, simple as that.

We're not sure how the chips are gonna fall with participation in each class but it'll be fun to find out. Also, we'll continue keeping the slug and pellet classes. As an example, you pellet shooters don't have to shoot against @steve123 and his 49fpe Altaros slugs that did so well last month.

Here's the kill zone sizes and distances and Troyer factors. Don't look if you're an AAfTA guy. 😁.

Yep, there's some dang tough targets in that mix, but also some relatively easy ones. Those AAFTA illegal Troyers sound pretty "Ultimate" to me. And yes, that opens up a bunch of strategizing for the full monty....do you stick with small calibers to squeak em in the tiny kzs? Or do you go with a bigger caliber with a better BC for better hit rates on the long range shots? Choices choices.

In the past I've shot my best scores when using my personal rangefinder during the match. So if you figure your dope with a specific rangefinder I'd suggest bringing that to use during the match.

As always, sign up via Practiscore, linked here on the PRGC calendar, as well as some more of the particulars for the match.

We apologize for such short notice on the match announcement. Ben wasn't sure if he was going to get that third target in for this month so we were holding out on the announcement. He does much of the work himself and he's just one guy.

Should be a fun match. This begs the question....what are you two gonna shoot?

I've been mentally going through my options for the new UFT format and of course want to shoot the 72 shot match if I'm driving that far to attend....but my "best" long range pellet flinger is just shy of 2 foot pounds over the limit. So the Vet Long with .22 MRDs @ 955-960 is out.....which leaves maybe the Ghost with .20/15.89 pellets, or of course the .20/18.9 slugs. Also considering swapping barrels to the .22 and getting a Ghost tune for MRDs just shy of 50fpe....it would also be fun to shoot a 20 fpe gun at the full Monty, even though some shots are out to 100. And the 20fpe thought opens up a lot of options for me.....as I stated in the announcement....choices choices.

Edit: just got to thinking if the .25/34gr combo is an option and looks like they'd need to be going 810fps to stay under 50fpe. Not sure how they'd shoot that low in speed but can't imagine it's their best. Plus, squeezing a .25 through a 3/8" kill zone doesn't leave much margin for error. The strategizing is fun.

Tomorrow I will see if I have the Vulcan ready with slugs, and Barb will be either shooting a 25 ghost or a 22 ghost
