HW/Weihrauch HW95 rebuild

I was under the impression that a spring compressor was not necessary for the HW95. I know for sure it is on the 97.

You could probably do it without a compressor. Re-assembly would be a fight and things might not go together smoothly.

There wasn't much pressure taking it out (35 lbs) for very long (2-3") with the broken/sagging spring.

I'm putting it back together this afternoon. We'll see how much force it takes to get the genie back in the bottle.

According to Vortek, no compressor is required using his kit.

The operation seems to be a success.

I re assembled the rifle with the vortek kit. It went back together with no problems.

..........

If you can push it all in there without a compressor I'd like to watch. There was much more force against the new spring going in than the old one coming out. About 2" of preload and 40# force. A compressor is definitely the way to go. You could get it back together but the little dog that holds the "breech plug" in there could slip out putting the "square pegs" in there. A fixture to hold it is best for sure.
...........

I shot about 25-30 shots and it diesels a bit. Not crazy but a little smoke on each shot. After about 35-40 shots it diesels very little. Once I got the smoke worked out of it I set up the chrono.

I shot about 100 shots over the chrono. I had a few low numbers (smoky shots) but it settled nicely between 688-692. The last 25 shots over the chrono were within this range. Only a whiff of smoke once in a while.

Here were the last 5 shots over the chrono. Iron sights. Sitting in a lawn chair with elbows on my knees at 25 yards.

It shoots as well as it ever did and the shot cycle is much improved. The velocity is higher than it ever has been. If I can get 10k shots through it before I have to do it again I'll be happy.

A win! Is this a .177 or two, two?

So I put a full tin of H&N's through it today. It shoots great.

The rifle really spits them out there with authority. It's smooth but it's potent. It's harder to tame than when it was shooting 600 fps for sure. Its no toy. It will knock a shotgun shell 30 yards if you get a good bite on it. It barely penetrated a shotgun shell before. Now it rips the brass right off the plastic.

By the time the sun set the pivot tension needed tightening and I could feel a little rub at the bottom of the stroke. It wasn't bad but it wasn't glassy smooth either. The trigger spring screw kept walking out and I had to keep turning it back in. The mounting screws needed retorquing twice.

I adjusted the pivot tension and took it out of the stock. You could see where the cocking shoe was touching the spring guide a little. I smeared a little more moly lube on it and dusted it down with some moly powder. It's as smooth as a baby's backside now. The trigger screw got a coat of hot pink nail polish. I think it's perfect.

I wiped out all the mounting point threads with acetone and torqued them over some blue loctite. Then mounted my old Airmax scope on it. Tomorrow I'll sight in the scope and see what the chrono says. Another 250 shots should determine if things are going to be groovin'.

If it will stack them at 690 fps like it did at 590 I'll be a happy man. We'll see...
