Flying w air guns

Hmm...seems to me the BEST...place to ask this question would be the...airline...that you plan on using for your trip ??? Seems to me that THEY'D have the most accurate comments for you.

I plan on that too but just looking for real world customer experiences

It also occurs to me that your average airline employee probably doesn't know the difference between the disciplines either, so a clear answer may not be given i.e. the whole air tank thing that may freak someone out.

I've thought of breaking down my guns and shipping them flat rate to my destination too, but not sure how the costs stack up in comparison to check-in

I haven't checked an airgun at the airport, but I would use a Hard-Sided case with a keyed padlock, zip tie, and all other locking points to keep it secure before leaving it with airport personnel. I would also add an air tag inside the case for tracking.
PCP degass the gun. Follow the airline's guidelines, as said before.
I know that with firearms the locks must not be TSA, you open the case for the agent then they seal it up. I've read that your tanks must be empty. File a declaration, get it inspected, and your case will receive TLC awaiting at secure baggage. Your other luggage well, good luck.

Any tanks/cylinders need to be disassembled so that the TSA can see inside of it. It also counts as showing they aren't pressurized. Take lots of spare parts because you never know what condition things will be in when you arrive.

I believe Jim Chapman has gone to mailing his guns to where he's going. He travels quite a bit including out of the country. If I remember, he uses a hardcase for golf clubs.

Ups your rifle ahead of time. Don't rely on the airlines.

If you want your gun to fly ship it air freight from the airport. It will get there before you do in much better condition. It's not in the passenger terminal. Call ahead and drop it off before you go to the terminal. Works dandy every time. You just have to pick it up at the airport at your destination. They don't deliver it. Cheap and easy.

I flew to Pyramid cup with 2 guns this year, not a issue. Hard case, two locks you keep the keys. Bottles off and valves out of bottles. Just roll up to baggage counter, tell them you are checking a firearm, they have you fill out a tag and have you open the case . They drop the tag inside and you lock it back up. They ask you to wait for 15 minutes near the bag check, in case TSA wants to inspect it. After 20 minutes if you haven't heard anything, off to your gate and your good to go. Keep your phone on just in case they call.

Enjoy your trip
