Backdrop for target shooting

I will be attempting to use old gallon size milk and juice jugs filled with sand and or 5 gallon bucket filled with sand and old clothes. My concern is with my son when he shoots ,what's behind his target? I'm teach him to check his surroundings before he pulls the trigger, just incase he misses his intended target. I live on a corner lot three houses surround the back of my property.
Is there a backdrop of some sort backdrop that can put up in case of a miss ? Either purchase or DIY type situation 🤔 I'm teaching my son these things the best i know how . Crossman 362 .22 and umarex notos .22

Depends on the area you want to cover, meaning how far will potential misses be? You can buy a storage tote are HD or Lowe’s or whatever, fill it with rubber mulch and cut out the lid to give you a window for targets. Very quiet target box and gives you the size of the box as backstop basically. There are tons of videos out there how to build these boxes.

As a matter of ethics and law, and depending on where and how your property is located, you are probably not in the right or acting within the law by having an outdoor range where you are shooting at or towards your neighbor's buildings, regardless of backstop. While working the soil in your garden next to your house or while occupying your garage would you want someone shooting directly at you?

The above being said, acting within the local laws, your backdrop would have to be higher and more robust than what caliber and projectile that you are shooting so that nothing can potentially strike any of your neighbor's person or property, directlyor indirectly.

If there's any doubt, maybe teach the young fella to shoot at a designated shooting range, or set up a small target area on public land where legal. There are thousands of shooting ranges listed on here:

Be sure to check the local laws. You do not want LEO knocking on your door if a neighbor complains. I live in the sticks and the regulations state no shooting closer than 150 yards to any building or structure. That is for ANY shooting, be it an elephant gun or a Red Ryder BB gun. With any backstop. Those making the laws are often clueless or take the easiest answer. But the law is the law.

M853 from CMP is the best rifle you can teach him marksmanship with imo. 4-5 fpe so get a sheet of plywood as a large backstop behind your target. Shoot at 10m. Once he consistently shoots over 450, he can move up.
