I'll find out this weekend, as I have time to try the AEA 66.2 grain pellets in the .30 caliber 700mm Slug liner 1:16 twist. I'm not going to jack them up much over 900 fps since past that kinda strains the gun and it doesn't feel "right" with that much FPE. So, I'll try them at 850, 875 and 900 fps and see how they do at 50, and if good at 50, then 100Y. I'll also look at the BC (GA) at those speeds. Easy to do with the Epoch. Pop out the 1:40 barrel and insert the 1:16 barrel. Two minutes and done.I have analysed the pellets from the pictures and measurements given in this thread and roughly tried to model them.
The first thing which came out was that this pellet appears to be aerodynamically unstable, not stable like most pellets. This is due to the very shallow base cavity moving the centre of gravity back, and the very shallow flare producing a very small stabilizing moment about the CG. This means that the pellets behave more like slugs, but with much reduced aerodynamic instability and increased drag coefficient compared to a slug. As a result, the pellet appears to have a very long yaw wavelength compared to other pellets.
Now comes the humble pie. Centercut was probably correct when he said a higher twist rate than the 1 in 40 inch he had would be better. First look shows a smoother trajectory with a 1 in 20 inch twist than the 1 in 40. However, I have not yet analyzed the errors at the target with the different twist rates. I need to look at the error sizes with the same inputs. When I said I thought a slower twist rate may be better, I was basically assuming they behaved like pellets, my mistake.
I've tried the 66 grain and spent enough time with them to know they'll not do this at 100 yards. This is 25 consequential shots at 100 yards with the 50 grain. I guess it's close to a 25 shot clover leaf. 4mph winds . 956 fps.I'll find out this weekend, as I have time to try the AEA 66.2 grain pellets in the .30 caliber 700mm Slug liner 1:16 twist. My compact g30 did when I had it set up for 99fpe with them, not sure now that's it's set up for lower power. Gonna have to try with the Vulcan 30Has anyone got these to group well yet?
How did the shooting session go with the 66?I'll find out this weekend, as I have time to try the AEA 66.2 grain pellets in the .30 caliber 700mm Slug liner 1:16 twist. Don’t waste your time. I tried with the 1:16 Slug barrel and it was at best, “Meh”. I shot them at 860 and 890 fps. BC was approximately the same as the AEA 50.5 grain .30 pellets. The 66.2 were good enough to print 2 inch groups at 100Y with an hour ocassional flier. Not worth the effort from both 1:16 or 1:40 twist 700mm barrels. How did the shooting session go with the 66?
I’ve gotten very good groups at 85 yards shooting them in my Panthera and my LCS!Once you've tried please let us know your thoughts on the new 66 gr, bc??
What speed? What do you consider very good groups? Thanks!I’ve gotten very good groups at 85 yards shooting them in my Panthera and my LCS!
