30-Yard Challenge

I was going back yesterday trying to find it and can’t… so thought I would just ask…
What is the difference in the masters card?
The Masters cards use the same target. However, there are only twenty targets - they all count - you don't get to eliminate your lowest target pairs.

I'll locate what page / post# that you can download the cards from

All 4 cards (30 & 40 Challenge and Masters) are available to download as PDFs on post# 2232 on page 112: #2,232 (click link)

Leaderboard Update: February 11, 2025 (1st Leaderboard of 2025)

Shooters, welcome to our first leaderboard update of 2025!

The cold weather season is still keeping many of our top marksmen from getting lead downrange and submitting cards, but we have a few really good submissions to start off this year...

Noteables:

TommyB has a 200 in the 30-Challenge with his trusty old FX Royale 400 shooting the 20.83g JSB MRD Lights

Ricky the Airgunnero has a 200 in the 30-Masters with his incredible GCMAG Magnum Gen2 - shooting pellets made in the Philippines.

TommyB shot a 199 30-Masters with his RAW HM1000X - blasting big 25.39g at 920fps.

EPG and NAProf are on the boards with their FX Crown Mk2s

JimmyD is on the board with his .22 P-35 - and he even shot a slug card with his Caiman X

Rick Cope is really getting dialed in with his HP RedWolf - a 197 30-Masters with MRDs at a blistering 976fps

WoodWelder posted an excellent 194 30-Challenge with his Brocock Sniper. Brococks have been consistently a top scoring rifle in these Challenges.

High 40 yard scores to date have been EPG and Ricky with 195 - not too many folks shooting 40 yards yet due to winter winds. TommyB did manage an excellent 193 10X score at 40 yards with a .177 RAW - great score with those little .177 pellets at that distance.

I put Greg's "mulligan" card and Rick's 16X card on the leaderboards for now... as a reminder to them of what they can try to beat later this year...

Ed, you missed my 199 17X from post #2,871 🤣

Hi Ricky,

Only your highest score for a rifle/caliber is posted to the leaderboard.

For your GCMAG in .22 - I posted the 200 15X for 30-Masters…. I thought the 199 17X was also a 30-Masters submission…?

Let me know… I could put the 199 17X under the 30-Challenge- even though you only shot 20 targets it still qualifies.

Hi Ed,

The 199 17X was a 30-Masters submission aside from the 200 15X since both cards were shot in a different manner.

Ya gotta wanna... get some lead downrange...despite the weather and footing conditions...

Leaderboard submission:
Target: 30-Challenge: 200 14X
Rifle: Benjamin Akela .177 (2.42" length cut down factory hammer spring)
Ammo: FX 10.3g at 880fps (last chronoed on 10/9/24 - probably slower today due to lower temp)
Huma Mod 30 - just one section
Arken EPL-4 6x24 FFP at 24x
Starting fill pressure 2,300psi on rifle gauge indoors)
Weather: 3mph mild breeze - freezing rain @ 38F throughout card

I was itching to shoot. I shot one sighter on this card - see white dot to the right of target pair #2 - then shot 24 straight at the card.

I shot row #1 with a single shot loader from my Remimex Daystar - it was taking too long and pellets were getting wet as I single loaded, so I ran inside and loaded a couple mags. Used mags to shoot the remaining rows. Final targets were target pair #11.

I did NOT expect to shoot 200 with the Akela in the rain. The last time I shot the rifle was 10/9/24 - I shot a 193 12X 30-Masters with it. I finally had a 24x scope on it and it performed great on this date. Prior to that I had a 14x scope on it - which is not enough magnification for the 30-Yard cards..

Damn, this thing is a laser. I forgot how nice I have it set up - the trigger is just awesome.

The rifle is completely stock except the following:
  • Removed the baffles and spring from the shroud - left air stripper on end of barrel.
  • Added DonnyFL moderator adapter to end of shroud to allow use of Huma Mod30.

Of course, the internals and trigger are polished up to EPG standards :)

This is unregulated - and I did not change my vertical hold throughout these 25 shots (1 sighter).

Hope she doesn't rust - can't wait to shoot her on the 30-Masters on a dryer day, lol !
I was done shooting today because it was wet and slippery - didn't want to break myself or the rifle falling on the deck.

A tale of two targets. I shot this 191 with my P35-22 yesterday and was a little disappointed. The weather report said the wind was only 5 or 6 mph but pellets seemed to be moving a lot and I wasn't guessing well. I also was wondering about cleaning the barrel. Then I shot the P35-177 and shot the 175. Pellets were flying all over the place. The last square, 11, is a good example. I was holding in the upper left corner barely on the target and got an X with the next to last shot and a 8 with the same hold on the last shot. Wind was inconsistent and I was not catching the changes.

I must have missed this little gem.

A great score for the .177 and those tiny 10g pellets, and in the rain! Way to go Ed.

Stuck inside this week with Norovirus, which is finally leaving my young 71 year old body. Good riddens!! 😀

Jim

People really do underestimate the small amount of wind that it takes to adversely affect our pellets and these ‘minute sized’ 10 rings we strive to hit in this challenge. For me, 5-6 mph wind is borderline “too much wind” to successfully shoot high scoring 30Y targets. I suppose it provides good practice in wind reading for some, but my experience in achieving any good scoring ( I.e., 195+) in 5 mph wind or greater is not good. Almost better to shoot groups and test tuning velocities when it’s too windy.

I’m starting to form a personal opinion ( based on seeing some posts from some really good competition bench shooters) on patiently waiting for a 9-10 am left to right crosswind or a 2-4pm right to left crosswind, depending on flag direction. I think there may be less vertical to worry about, but this is just speculation on my part.

A couple of examples:

It appears I can sometimes shoot right at the top of the 10 ring at 12 o’clock in a light head wind, and score a 10. But, if I get a tail wind, then it seems I need to hold low and left between 7 and 8 o’clock on 8/9 ring and I hit some 10’s. I think the tail winds are tricky to read.

My preferred wind speed is zero to 1mph, and even that blows pellets around. I will freely acknowledge, many of us would never get a chance to shoot outside if we were to wait for these light to no wind scenarios.

I agree Tommy. It was the last day with decent weather this week. Early in the day has less wind but it's too cold. I've been avoiding right before sunset trying to get another squirrel or two. That season ends the end of this month. So better times are coming. But while I don't like the results much I have a lot of 177 pellets and get a lot of shots on a fill so practicing with it still seems to make sense.

Yeah, I would rather shoot on a challenging wind day, than not shoot at all. Sometimes, I’ll bring the Annie .22LR to the range and leave the air rifle in the car, when the wind is too much for an AG.

Here's one to go on the spreadsheet although it's only a minor change. 193 8X I think. I shot it a few minutes ago with minimal wind. I was still making scope changes. I did not let the gun and scope sit very long in the 46 degree weather which may have been a contributor. I shot a magazine at a different target to get sighted in first but still was off a little. Way too many 19s. I've shot worse, however.

Went to the range this morning. Normally, I stay away from Saturdays because the 50/100 Sight in range is too crowded.

Wanted to try the new JTS 22.07g pellets, so I set up for 30Y Challenge targets and one near flag deployed. Wind was light at 1-4 mph, but picked up after the first 45 minutes.

FX Royale .22
Leupold 6.5X20 X40mm EFR
JTS 22.07g and JSB 15.89

Shot a pair of 193-10X 30Y Challenge cards
Shot one 30Y Masters, 190-8X

Good, not great. I’m a little rusty and not sure if the 805-812 fps was fast enough for this new to me pellet.

The 190 Masters was with the JSB 15.89 at a whopping 930 fps.

Great morning, glad to get out of the house.

Edit: Math error. 191-10x on one of the 30Y Challenge Cards. I forgot to deduct 2 points for the big fat ‘8’ in box 12.

Too windy in S. Florida for precision shooting. I did put an order in for a .177 Black Wolf, I'll keep you guys posted :). The RAW Benchrest rifle will have to wait for awhile...I posted in the traditional rifle thread, this Feinwekbau 150 is amazing. Shot two cards in windy weather. The second was 188 6X. One of the shots was taken by my wife...she wanted to shoot the "new" rifle. Never say no to the wife! Anyways, I think it's good enough to post here. On a windless day, it should be much better. Cheers! Rick

Great shooting Rick! We’ll definitely put the 188 with a springer on the leaderboard.

I researched the FWB 150 and it appears to be an old 10-meter match spring rifle.

We have a shooter on our challenges named beerthief. He has submitted some fantastic cards including a perfect 200 20X card in the past at 30 yards with his single stroke pneumatic (SSP) 10-meter rifle.

Of course, I’d imagine you need a very mild wind day to shoot those lightweight 10-meter pellets out to 30 yards.

I’d imagine that in 10-meter competition the SSPs came after the pure springers and eventually the PCP became the standard.

Looking forward to seeing that future Blackwolf on our leaderboards as well.

Hi Guys,
It warmed up enough for me to do some tuning on my NW Crown with the 500mm barrel in .22. I haven't shot that barrel in a while and all my tunes were for much warmer weather. It took about 4 magazines to settle in on a tune which was giving me 3/8in 5 -shot groups at 30 yds. As the wind had died down to about 2-3mph with gusts to 6mph I decided to try a 30 yd Masters Card.
It is not my best ever with this setup, but it is my best this year (and my only one this year) 194-11x. This was also my first try with my new Athlon Heras SPR 6-24X56 FFP scope. This is my first MRad scope. Seems to be really very, very good for the under $500 I paid for it. Also pretty light weight. And it forced me to rewrite part of my home-made Ballistics program so I can get the holdovers in Mrad. All in all a good experience so far.
Cheers,
Greg
