To remove the finish use a paint and varnish remover. Preferably a thin one, not a paste. Clean remover with lacquer thinner. Let dry thoroughly. At least 24 hours. Stain to your liking. Finish can be an oil, lacquer or polyurethane. The oil finish is applied with a rag and will remove some stain so stain extra dark. Be patient. Let each coat dry thoroughly. Some polyurethane finishes need immediate re-coating (else the finish can wrinkle) to desired look. This post goes into more detail.What was your method of stripping back, staining and refinish?
