30-Yard Challenge

Had a lower wind day and shot a couple cards with my FWB150. If the wind stays down, I'll be trying the Masters 30 and the 40yd challenge tomorrow or Saturday with my .22 Red Wolf.... I like the dichotomy of shooting a 6.4 fpe rifle then doing the same challenge at 53 fpe :). Cheers!

Rick - Is the FWB 150 a break barrel? This is phenomenal with a Capital ‘P’ for a break barrel at 30Y.

I remember shooting my Diana 34P .22 break barrel about 7-8 years ago, and never could figure out how to hold the rifle for super tight groups. Was not paper target challenge shooting then, but those 190+ scores are impressive!

Now, let’s see that RW at 40Y 😃

No, it's a fixed barrel with a side cocking mechanism. Super easy and smooth. I have a bunch of break barrels and they all are accurate, but not close to this one. Therefore, my obsession :). I really enjoy all of the air rifle options. Hoping for a low end weekend to put some quality scores on the board. Cheers! Rick

Thanks for clarifying.

Tommy, did you shoot your best score first? That is my normal pattern.

Hi Jim

Yes, in this case it was my first card. However, sometimes my best score comes after I shoot a few cards. I settle down, slow down my shot to shot routine and wait for a wind call I like. There were plenty of mistakes across the four cards.

Shot these two cards yesterday. Both are leaderboard subsimmsions - as they are the only cards that I believe that I've shot with these rifles this year, lol.

It was insanely windy yesterday - gusts to 25+mph. Then just before dusk the wind died down - so I ran out to shoot and got these two cards in. Today looks like a good shooting day. Then back to sub 32 degrees for a high on Sunday.

40-Challenge: 192 9X
Rifle: FX PowerPup .22 (600mm "old style" steel tube Dreamline barrel)
Scope: Sightron SII 36X
Pellet: JSB 20.83g MRDLs @ 880fps

30-Masters: 195 14X
Rifle: Reximex Daystar .177 (600mm - unregulated)
Pellet: FX 10.3g
Starting pressure: 195bar
Scope: Athlon Argos 10-40x56 SFP target scope at 40X

Did not chrono the Daystar, but tuned to 850fps at that fill pressure. Super happy with 14X Masters my first time out with the Daystar - its a big long, heavy (and beautiful) .177 - but super stable shooting off the bench.

Got to decide what to shoot today - all my rifles are filled now that I've got a new compressor, lol.

I shot one sighter - an X - and then improved on Friday's card with this card yesterday. I think it would have been better but my fill pressure may have been a bit too low near the end of the card - dropping velocity (unregulated).

This rifle is insane. I paid $425 for it on AGN classifieds. They are now $455 new. The Akela/Cayden/Kratos are also made by Reximex. My experience is that these rifles shoot WAY above their price point.

I think on a perfect wind day, this Daystar could shoot a perfect 20X card - I probably can't , but the rifle can.

Also tried the Akela at 40 yards with little 10.3g. Shot a 185 4X 40-Challenge. It was breezy. Then the breeze dropped and I shot an excellent first 1/2 of a 40-Challenge. Then a huge storm blew in and I had to run for cover - so I'll finish that card another day - but I think I may break 190 with the .177 Akela at 40 yards with 10.3g pellets.

Get some lead downrange while the weather allows!!

Boy, they really are good rifles. 197-15x says it all!

I got into PCPs about 8 years ago. First gun was DS Regal XL .22 bolt action. Next up FX Royale .22, then RAW HM1000X .22HP. Taipan .25L, HW100 .22, RW Safari, Paradigm .30, FX Boss.

No regrets on any of these, but Ed you have a way with these $500-700 used guns and making them shine.

I went high end on my PCP choices, but I am convinced that the current Brands & Technologies are making some phenomenal guns in the $500-$1,000 range.

Finally got a decent shooting day here in Connecticut. It was a little breezy, but 50-52F and overcast.

The Akela continues to blow my mind. When I last shot it on 3/1, I shot a 40-Challenge of 185 5X on a windy day. The wind died slightly and I had a 40-Challenge card going that looked like I could break 190, and a massive storm started and I had to stop...

...well I finished the card today. About 1/2 the card was left to finish. The two day 40-Challenge card finished as a 191 10X - I used a Single Shot Loader that arrived a couple days ago - first time I ever had an SSL for the Akela. I texted the card to TommyB. Then I kept shooting.,,

No good scores to report. I did build a new base for my bench, heavy and super stable. No wobble, so I can't use that excuse ;-). Was anxious to try it out but very windy. Shot anyways, but after my first challenge card I decided to make a couple wind flags and see if that helps. My FWB 150 was just spraying light pellets every where. I have not tried flags, been usually holding out for low wind days. Used some light pink fabric my wife had laying around, seemed to work, and also seemed appropriate...one at the target and one halfway. So this is a card I shot twice, one blind to the gusting (and swirling) wind, one trying to "read the wind". Now I have a new skill to learn. And it's different with each rifle, and it's quite humbling. The circled shots were the first go around. I also shot my .22 Red Wolf and my .177 S510XS with mixed results but no cards worth posting. Ricky @TheAirgunnero would be proud of the attempts, but probably not the results :)

I have one to submit for the leader board. 198 13X with my P35-22 shooting H&N Baracuda Match at about 810 fps. I was using my Athlon Argos 10-40 set at 40X. We're having really nice weather this week. Sunday and Monday were not so good but today was great and the next several are supposed to be. I shot a 191 this morning. The first half was decent but then the wind picked up. The weather report said the wind was over 5 mph this evening but my wind flags showed no wind and I did not adjust. I was using pellets straight from the tin but I have some sorted ones I may try before switching over to the 177. I like the column on the far right on this target.

Hi Guys!
We have had decent (not too windy) weather the last two days so I have been sending "lead downrange". Unfortunately the results haven't been much to speak of. Haven't had much luck with the NW Crown in .22 since I switched it back from .177. Still fine tuning it. The problem is that I got a new toy to play with instead of fine tuning the Crown. I got an FX DRS 500mm .177 - had to try the barrel bottle idea! I got it in the synthetic stock so I could try to make it fit me better without worrying about wreaking an expensive piece of wood.

The photo below shows the DRS with my homemade cheek riser, my 3D printed butt add-in to increase the length of pull, my pic rail/sling button under the fore stock and my drilled-out stock so I can adjust the hammer spring tension without taking the stock off. And I got the CF Shroud/Barrel Tube from Europe Airguns. The stock tune was no good for my favorite 13.4 gr pellets and I have been spending a lot of time trying to find the sweet spot. If I can then the NW Crown will probably go. If I can't then the DRS will go.

Not having any luck getting good scores from those two rifles I broke out my HFT rig. It was a light 2-3 mph breeze with occasional gust to 5mph this morning. But the direction was coming straight down the range at me. I've had good results in this type of breeze before so I went big - 40 yd Masters.

For the leader board - 194-13x 40 yd Master s card with a .177

You will note however, there is a strange hole to the right of the last bull in the margin. That needs to be explained. I mount the Challenge paper targets on the IBS 50 heavy targets and use the green bulls all around the outside of the challenge target as sighters. In this case I actually shot three full mags (66 shots) to get the 20 on the target. About 24 of those were sight-ins before I started, but the rest were me trying to figure out the wind shifts and gust. When shooting the last row I needed to clean it to get a good score. So I shot during a bunch of different breezes in the sighter just to the right of the last paper to try to figure out when to shoot. As you can see had several flyers - one hitting the target paper. (See photo)

Yep, wouldn't be a report from me without a story!

Cheers,
Greg

Nice shooting Greg !

Holy Smokes - 66 shots to shoot a Masters Card! EPG would never take more than 25 - and those 5 would be before I started the card, lol.

Actually, you are doing it the “right” way. My lack of shooting sighters has killed me in real competitions. Your method of using sighters to constantly reevaluate the wind during a card is what all the best shooters do in real “for money” competitions.

Awesome 40-Masters with .177 !

That gray synthetic stock looks nice! I cannot see your air cylinder, so assume stock is a bit longer than tube. Great 40Y Masters. Q. I’m guessing your hold(s) was right on the 10 ring at 12 o’clock with a 2 mph head wind. Maybe between 10 and 9 ring?

Head winds are easier for me than tricky tail winds.

Tommy,
On the DRS the air cylinder is wrapped around the barrel. The carbon fiber "shroud" that you see is the air cylinder. It has about 210cc of air and another 30cc in the fake magazine plenum. I sort of followed a video by "Tilly's Gunstocks" to make my own adjustable cheek riser as most of my scopes have to be on high rings and a high rail because of magazine and objective lens sizes. That stock, before modification, only weighed 30.5 oz. With the Athlon scope and my mods the whole kit weighs in at 6.5 lbs.

As for the holds - by the time I was shooting the last row the wind had picked up and the pellets were starting to be all over the place. You can see from the pic with the green target that I would take a shot when the wind was blowing to see where it would go. Then I would figure out where to hold for that breeze level and try it in a different puff. Kept playing around until I thought I got a period of steady breeze and then shot for real.

Cheers,
Greg

Went to the range today. Nice warm temps, keep em' coming.

I had the RAW TM1000X .177 ( just cleaned barrel ) with me this morning. Wind was light and I just had my Randolph front mechanical rest cleaned and now have the horizontal windage knob actually 'working.' This is good because before it would not work and I would constantly pick up my rear Protektor bag and move horizontally from bull to bull. I knew this was inefficient but underestimated how problematic it is for getting adjusted for each shot. Now, I just use the knob and can move left or right across the row I am shooting.

Shot three 40Y Masters Cards and four 30Y Masters cards:

40Y Masters:

189-5X
192-8X
193-8X ( Will submit this for leaderboard in March )

30Y Masters

191-12X
194-12X
198-11X
199-15X ( Will submit this for leaderboard in March )

Wow Tommy, the 199 Card must have a sub 1/4" spread over all 20 shots - Awesome. You have the RAW dialed in!!
