Pulled the trigger on a cronus

I have a Cronus also, and think it’s a great scope. But IF you don’t need higher magnification, the Ares ETR 3-18x is every bit as clear as the Cronus, turrets excellent, reticle the same. At half the price. I have one of the 3-18x Ares ETR Mil and for PRS or NRL-22 or even EFT, it’s truly ar great scope at a great price.

Pretty hard to beat the Athlon line of scopes. Here we do pay a bit of a premium on them but the lifetime warranty makes it less painful. Currently have an Ares ETR 4.5 -30x 56 on a PRS 22lr and it’s every bit as good as the near same spec Cronus my friend is using. I’m currently in the market for something to top a Beeman R9 , Athlon is my first choice.

These are older scope designs, l think 5 years old now, so I'm interested in how improved a G3 Cronus would be??~! I wonder if this will happen this year or next?

Same here, I can't tell much difference between the ETR line and the Cronus line. Maybe a hair better turrets on the Cronus G2 but that's being picky.

The Ares ETR 4.5-30x is comparable glass wise to the Cronus. What I don’t like is the reticle (same layout) is thicker in the ETR than the Cronus. For the Ares ETR 3-18x, the reticle is the same thickness ((thinness) as the Cronus. And the glass is good enough on the 3-18x Ares ETR that I don’t miss higher magnification.

I haven't been keeping track of all the reticle thicknesses in all the Athlon lines but I like the thicker reticles more for the mid to lower power scopes. I think it's .05 mil for the Helos G2 6-24(must be for the ETR 4.5-30 too??) and the new Ares BTR G3 2.5-15 is .06 mil, then the HG2 2-12 is much thicker.

The reticle in the ETR 15-60 for me is almost too thin but I can turn the illume on for dimly lit shots.

I prefer the CG2 APRS6 IIRC .04 mil reticle for long range steel.

Another friend local to me likes his ETR 3-18 the most of his mid priced scopes.

But it's good we have a variety to choose what works best for each person or preference.

The PD's are up so this morning I shot some with my Ares BTR G3 2.5-15x50 on 2.5x and I could still see the reticle hashes which was the goal and info I needed to test. 7x seemed about right for the FOV and reticle size with all 8 of them I hit from 20Y to 80Y.
