You can run infrared laser site and just use the night vision as like a spotter for that and then you don't even have to really hunch over your rifle and you just point and click. I have to do something similar with my old army surplus AN PVS4 night vision scope. It's got the range finding reticle instead of the Crosshair so just mounted an infrared laser sight and use the set up like a Red Dot. It's also nice to have some infrared spotlights because they make eyes glow like emeralds and there's no mistaking them for anything else

BUT we generally have nice weather so we can shoot more. I have a dream and it doesn't involve being blue.

I would be VERY cautious about using "Night Vision" as I understand it, California deems it illegal for use. If I were you, I would check it more deeply.
Yes, you do need a hunting license with you while taking of any animal (even snake/lizard catching, a fishing license is required).
Oddly enough, lead ammunition from an air gun IS LEGAL in California as air guns are NOT CONSIDERED FIREARMS in this stoopit State. While I have double checked this with the CDFW, it was a few years ago, so perhaps a recheck is something else to consider.
My apologies for all of the bad news, but I'm simply trying to make folks aware.

Even rats and mice? How about spiders, flies, hornets, snails?

These "hunting laws" make no sense at all, in light of shoplifting under $950 is defacto legal in CA.
