Daystate Black Wolf

So...

I just finished putting about 200 rounds through the Blackwolf, sighting in the scope and having fun in general. I don't have experience with other PCP rifles, but I feel like I got my money's worth. I'm very satisfied with all of my purchase decisions:
  • .22 caliber
  • Laminate stock
  • Bottle
  • 23" barrel
  • BRK moderator
  • 100 cu ft tank @ 4500 psi
  • Buying from AoA
Those last two points are probably the biggest, for this PCP noob. Having a dive shop nearby, the tank instead of compressor was such great advice. Being able to refill in about 10 seconds without needing a power source was so convenient. And having AoA do the initial setup on the gun meant I could focus on the scope and having fun right out of the box. I won't need to make any power adjustments for a while.

I won't do the gun a disservice by posting my groups. I'm so new that the issues are certainly all mine. But it's definitely a LOT better than my break barrel, and I'm completely satisfied.
we can always compare your before groups with your "after" groups.

  1. 5 shots, 50y, moderator on
  2. 11 shots, 50y, moderator on, after wind adjustment attempt
  3. 11 shots, 50y, moderator off
Ammo was JSB Exact Monster .22 Redesigned SHALLOW Skirt, as recommended by AoA after testing.

Okay.

nice!
moderator must slightly decrease FPS ??? unless it's so heavy it tips the barrel down... which i doubt.
were you on a stable bench?

Shooting on bags on top of a permanent concrete bench. That's a pretty big difference at 50y, I'm guessing. Maybe I changed something with the rifle positioning on the bags after taking off the moderator? I need to get a bipod...
I think you will notice the barrel and gun will "settle in" after a few hundred pellets.. or you might polish the barrel with some JGB bore paste then give it a good clean and another 100 pellets and shazam.
Also... how hard is the trigger adjusted?

The test sheet from AoA gave it a standard deviation of 1.0! So it's very likely to be me that's the issue.

Trigger isn't adjusted as light as the Red Wolf I demoed in the store, but it's light enough. Not a hair trigger, just enough resistance to be safe, IMO. I don't have a tool to give you a measurement.

Interesting and disappointing. I would expect a single ragged hole at 25 yards indoor or out. I'd keep looking as that pellets doesn't seem very magic to me.

Definitely needs to test more ammo type. I believe AOA only test at their indoor 20 yard range, which is not enough distance to see best ammo for the rifle. The speed of the pellets matters as well, if too fast it'll start to spiral which changes the point of impact each time. Looking at your 25 yard groups, I suspect the pellet is going too fast. Did you play with the speed dial?

Check out these videos below regarding speed of pellets vs accuracy.

I wouldn't go down the rabbit hole of polishing the barrel just yet. I would say that is the very very very last resort. I would check for various pellet type / weight and pellet speed first. The down side of barrel polish that many don't mention is it takes a lot more shots to season the barrel, up to 100 shots...and your barrel will like different pellets compare to before and after.

Or better yet, give AOA a call and see what they say.

Congrats on your new rifle. I may be joining the Blackwolf pack with maybe a walnut stock but that darn Redwolf Safari Hi-Power is tempting me to join the Redwolf pack.

I've worked with both the RW and the BW now and they are both perfect in their own way, but, i just wish Daystate would have valved the bottle so it could be unscrewed instead of having to completely degas the gun. Valves would allow us to buy an extra bottle or two and carry them in a back pack, instead of toting huge scuba type bottle. Afterall @Daystate if ya can do it for the Ghost and the Alpha/Delta wolfs.... it's a no brainer.

I really think it's me, since AoA got great results with the same pellet. I don't have a chrono yet so I can't check the tune. I'm just shooting what they sent it to me with.
I noticed that the BW i set up needed the shroud screwed down tighter... it did affect the groups until i snugged the shroud up snug.

I'll check that, thanks for the tip!
Just got back home from vacation... I checked the shroud and it seems (very) tight.

Would it be a bad idea to mess with the power settings without a chronograph? I'm thinking of taking the regulator down from 145 bar to 135, starting at the max hammer setting then testing it as I work down the dial. It's currently at min at 145.

Couple thoughts…
1) you can’t hurt anything by adjusting the power wheel and/or by trying different pellets - and pellet weights
Start at highest pwr wheel setting and work your way down
2) I have a nice air chronograph mk3 listed that you might consider BEFORE messing with the reg pressure
3) also remember you have to degas the gun completely before decreasing the reg pressure; you can increase reg without degassing
4) if you do reduce the pressure try to start at 110 and work your way up 3-5 psi at a time
But
Use the pellets that the gun seems to like before playing with the reg… should save you some time

Yep, I've stated the same about how convenient it is to have an extra 480cc valve when shooting the Ghost....the flip side to the convenience is that with the Red Wolf, the (firing) valve sees full bottle pressure. Which essentially makes the plenum VERY large, and potentially helps the gun make more power.

Dunno how that unvalved bottle versus power potential plays into the Black Wolfs design, but it may have been very intentional.

First time taking my BW to the range today to get it sighted. Small orange target is sighted at 25 yards. Top 2 splatter targets and the diamond paper target at the bottom left are 50 yard groups.

For the 25 yards sighters groups, I played with no moderator, Sumo Donnyfl, and Donnyfl Tatsu. Groups with Sumo is the best but did bring point of impact down just a tad. No moderator shot the second best.

Regulator is set at 145 bar from AOA shooting 960 FPS with hammer at MIN, using 25 grain monster redesigns. I didn't play with the hammer spring since that speed and pellet weight is where it wants to be. I am pretty happy with the performance.
