Resources Field target van for travel

I have a great cot that I set up in my Ford Transit Connect LWB van (i'm 6'2" tall), makes for a comfy room with a place to store everything I need for a match. It adjusts to any angle I park on (try to get it as level as possible), rifle case (and a bunch more stuff) fits under the cot. The Connect is my daily driver so everything breaks down for travel and storage when not going to a match or camping.

I'm looking for something larger like the smallest of the Ram Power Vans, but they are crazy expensive new.

I want to keep gas prices down as well so I can maximize travel to lots of events

I can't complain with the Transit Connect (its the small Transit van) gas milage, 26 around town and 30 on the freeway if I don't exceed 70, at 80mph (Nevada speed limit) its getting 27mpg. I treat the gas pedal like an on/off switch, so if you drive like a normal human you'll do better.
Ive driven a lot of miles and normal humans rarely pay much attention to the happy pedal! Lol

Curious
has anyone decked out a van for travel to various shooting or field target events?
I’m considering doing a build out of a travel van I can get to events with AND sleep in as hotels are pricey.
Not into big RV’s.
Sorta. I bought a Ford Transit Connect and built a cot in the back. This allows me to store stuff underneath. The downside is that the ceiling is low.

I slept in rest areas on my way to and from Arizona.

I got one of these
It gets 26 mpg and fits in the garage. Can sleep three has a refrigerator and a sink and out door shower. Full ac power
It is awesome to travel to an event. I kinda stay at hotels when I get someplace. But this makes three day trip super easy.
I had it built but you can find them used when people want a bigger RV.

You might not want to rule out a cargo trailer, You can do all kinds of stuff to them,
Mike
This is true.

6 or so years ago I set up a little cargo trailer that I already owned as a camping trailer for airgun weekends.

This is the only photo I can find. At that time, I had a cot for me to sleep on, and my son wasn't too tall to sleep the other direction, from side to side. So I suspended a bed for him to sleep in. It worked great, and I occasionally still use it, when there's gonna be a bunch of rain in the forecast for a match weekend, or when it's supposed to be really cold (I put a tiny wood stove in it), or when we're camping where there's bear activity. Yeah, seriously. Just feels more secure than a tent, although I'm sure they could get in if they wanted to.

But mostly, I shifted to tent camping, just cuz it's easier and more convenient than hauling a trailer. And tent camping works great for the summer field target weekends.

For urban camping, like Walmart parking lot or rest stop type stuff, the little cargo trailer would beat the pants off a tent.

If I was gonna get very serious about traveling long distances for matches, I think a camper shell on a pickup wouldn't be a bad way to go.

Thanks.... just checked out used and a 2023 is about $38K give or take a couple $K.

I've been considering the camper shell option... but I'm happily attached to my paid for 2017 Honda Ridgeline and it just seems to smallish for lots of stuff... i need to return to minimalist living.

That looks ready to go!

When my friend and his nephew was in to the 1:5 and 1:8 RC racing scene here he got a little camper, not that you can easy drive across little Denmark in hours, but as that was 2 day events going back and forth would be stupid.

The camper was of course kitted out with all the stuff 2 adult potheads ( my friend driver and me mechanic / pit crew ) and a kid would ever want,
The nephew driving those insane fast 1:8 nitro cars,,,,,, daum.
The 1:5 RWD cars was more it for us oldies, also more geeking out on tire choice / thread cut and setup, not that setup on a 1:8 nitro racer is not important too.

Also fun to see the kid beat adult men thinking they was all that.

I wonder what the break-even point is? In other words, how many events would a person need to attend before the cost of buying and running a rig worked out to be cheaper than paying for the hotels?
Thats what i think is cool about the enclosed trailer when i built mine i only had about $3000 invested for everything and i still use it as my pickup truck and hauling my quad.

We used to have a 32 class C RV that we would pull the 2 ATV trailer to the ATV parks. Every thing about those weekend trips was expensive. We don't go for extended stay trips any more so we sold the RV but kept the trailers and just use the truck to pull the trailer for day trips. I have a high top cap on the truck and could easily set up for overnight camping in it.
