Learning to shoot in the wind.

I went to the range on Saturday morning. There was an 18 mph crosswind. Temps in the forties. I set up at 45 and 25 yards and I was just hoping to get on the paper target. To my surprise it was hitting just 4 Mil lines left at the 45 yard target. And it was three down. The wind was pretty consistent so I was able to get to the center of the target in three or four shots. Then drop the field target on the first shot from forty five yards out in an 18 mph crosswind. It was so much fun I did it again.

I am really surprised that after just three very breed sessions shooting in the wind. My confidence level had gone up a lot.

Before I was really intimidated by the wind. Now with some understanding and a tiny bit of practice. I can at least relax and make a good attempt at it.

@Iowa Airgunner - how is the wind game going?

Really well.
After only three times out trying it my confidence level has improved 100 %.
I’m not saying it’s easy or I’m good at it. And I’m not saying wind is not big deal. I’m saying I am much less intimidated.
I have a lot to learn but it’s all about practicing. Saturday morning are my time.

interesting to read even though it’s Br related

Best way to learn how to shoot in the wind is to shoot in the wind.

I was shooting a 29fpe airgun today in this, from 30 yards out to 140 yards.

For me, wind is never a reason not to shoot.
I have to agree... at first if it was windy i would say "oh well" and do something else...now... it's "hell yeah" bring on the challenge.

Wind.

My mortal enemy, the source of much grief.

Most often i am OK and the wind from the left push my shot to the right, but then other times it seem to be the opposite and wind from the left push my shot left.
Now i have noticed that in the range the wind flags between me and my target can blow in 3 different directions and two of them being opposing directions

Maybe something else that accident tape on a short pole are better.

Constant winds ( average wind speeds with gusts only a little higher ) i can sort of deal with just fine, but the days with swirling winds and much difference in the gusts are a pain, and it is days like that i have been having lately.

I personally prefer to be dialed half way in for the wind, so when a stronger gust come i loose to one side, and when wind die off i loose to the other side.
Most often this is just a Inch or two at my max range of 118 - 130 M, which i feel is not too bad factoring in i shoot .177 13 grain slugs.

16 gr slugs are indeed better in this regard and in general, but value ( shooting fun ) for money i find is best with the 13 gr slugs so i mainly shoot those, but for sure if i was to show off my meager skills i would for sure set up with 16 grain.
