well, not good but could be worse i would guess the sight did it and it is only on the back so that could be refinished
cast steel has a problem with rust but maybe the sight base isn't cast
clean it up and do not store the rifle with the diopter mounted i use Break Free i have for 48 years wipe it down if you look at it but the sight did that

Before doing anything- read this:

so, after looking it seems to be a Falke model 90 and a rare rifle at only 200 made
now the rifle looks dry, no oil or spray on protection, it happens but it shouldn't
every gun you own needs to be inspected from time to time keep a book on them
and as you wipe down the gun the oil will be transferred to the foam in the case and that helps also
this blaming foam cases is nonsense it is lack of care plain and simple
all those little bits of clothes that is left on the surface will collect moisture as well as anything but a well coated surface WILL NOT RUST
clean it up oil it down and move on
sometime and effort it will look as it did
if you look at a case and it has not been opened in a while, open it up and wipe it down
if you open the case wipe it down
if you pick it up wipe it down
the gun does not have hands you do use them

I do not know what Willy did so I will not make that call... but do know I always oil heavily oil mine...........

That's the stuff of nightmares. I fought against that for decades in climates like Florida and Tennessee. MP-5 liberaly every few weeks...Inside and out...worked for me but had to be diligent. I'm down to my last bottle of the stuff...No longer available. Was great for barrel cleaning also. Hate to see a classic gun comprised in such a way, sorry to see and best of luck with restoration.

Bummer!

I learned the hard way that certain foams used in rifle cases actually attract moisture.

The soft case I won at a raffle ruined my FX Royale 400 With excessive rust. I live in a arid climate and have kept rifles in cases before without problems. Man I was angry when I opened the case, and still miffed every time I look at the gun.
