Why is the efficency of pcp air rifles so low compared to firearms?

KITROBASKIN No I just wounderd where the energy goes that's all. I am new to this world of air rifles and try to understand and learn as much as I can. I have got some good answers in this thread about resistence not being proportional to input energy and that made me feel stupid. It's so...

Why is the efficency of pcp air rifles so low compared to firearms?

Scotchmo The barrel has 1 atm at 14.5 psi. To get to that pressure the barrel volume has to be WorkingPressure/14.5×PlenumVolume in volume. That will happen way befor infinity. (But still too long)

Why is the efficency of pcp air rifles so low compared to firearms?

Motorhead Would that mean that if you put in the same extra air it would yield more FPE if it is done by raising the pressure than by increasing the plenum size? I figure since pressure when the bullet is at the end of the barrel would be more or less the same so the losses to friction would...

Why is the efficency of pcp air rifles so low compared to firearms?

Motorhead You meen something like if it takes X fpe to push against the friction of the barrel it takes that energy no matter what energy is delivered to the bullet and that X is a bigger portion of the total energy used the less energy we put into the system? That would make sense.

Why is the efficency of pcp air rifles so low compared to firearms?

Scotchmo The numbers on how much energy is in pressurised air I got from wikipedia. How much pressurised air a rifle uses is no state secret. Neither is how much energy comes out of the barrel in form of kinetic energy. Just devide output energy with input energy to get the efficency.

Kevin23 This makes sense to me. Thank you.

Why is the efficency of pcp air rifles so low compared to firearms?

About 30 % of the chemical energy from gunpowder is transfered to kinetic energy of the bullet. So the percantage of the pressure energy transfered to the kinetic energy of the bullet is even higher. A top quality pcp transfers roughly 21-22 % of the pressure energy to kinnetic energy of the...

Would nitrogen give 1.4 % more fpe than air?

ackuric Yes. I think 1.4 % more FPE would give about 0.65 % more FPS.

Would nitrogen give 1.4 % more fpe than air?

I'm mostly interested in if I have done the calculations corectly. Since the same principle for calculation should work for other gas mixes.

Would nitrogen give 1.4 % more fpe than air?

Nitrogen is faster than oxygen. And air contains both nitrogen and oxygen. When I weigthed the expansion rate of oxygen and nitrogen in proportion to their share of the air content I got a combined expansionrate that was lower than for nitrogen alone. I got the result that nitrogen would give...
