break barrel would be cheaper but pcp is the way to go, i started out with a hatsan bullboss .25 and its great for small game, a hand pump is economical and works fine but the bigger the tank the harder the pumping so i quickly upgraded to a cheap compressor from amazon.

i have gone through 3 hatsan hercules bullys in .45 , i have returned all 3 for various defects, all 3 had good power but was horribly inaccurate, at 20 yds it was tight groups but by 40 yds they were all over the place, would not recommend.

how did your shortening off the barrel affect accuracy and fpe, ive been considering the same thing but cant find much info on the subject.
