Both the H&N FTT 11.42gr or JSB Exact 13.73gr will shoot very well. p.s. - You can also consider both the H&N Baracuda 13.58 gr or the JSB Heavy 15.89gr .20 caliber pellets, both of which also shoot well in mine but the FTT's and JSB 13.73 are both that hair better at least in mine for accuracy.

Why return it? Ram fails? Just buy the parts and convert to spring power, buy the needed o-rings and rebuild the gas ram or make the part or 2 needed to be able to use a Crosman Nitro Piston in it. They're not one bit hard to work on and can be made into pretty nice rifles with a good tune and...

I've read of a few ways companies limited springer power. Weaker springs, longer pistons to limit length of stroke, a hole in the piston so aor would escape through the hole when firing and reduce power. As Air King mentioned, you may well just need the full power spring and standard piston...

Don't own the 77 (or any underlevers) but I do own a Norica Deadeye GRT .22. Nowhere near the fit/finish of anything HW/Beeman and yes I own a few of those, although all mine are break barrels. The Norica would make a decent, inexpensive pesting rifle and if you have an itch to try one, buy one...
